Spring 2019 - I love Professor Nguyen-Vo! She's EXTREMELY intelligent, kind, sweet, and funny, and her lectures are super engaging. The slides don't show all the details of her lectures, so you actually have to pay attention to what she's saying. (She also doesn't post them to encourage coming to class.) The readings are really interesting, especially her own, but they can be dense sometimes. However, just remember to keep up with the readings and go to her office hours, they help! She loves talking to students who care about the class/topics and is super open-minded. I would love to take another class with her.

stirs interesting discussion, tries to get students to think critically and analytically and to be open-minded, but it takes only a few weeks to figure out her real opinions re: certain issues. she brings up good thinking points, but sometimes she is too much of an academic and fails to suggest (or allow students to suggest) real solutions to the problems facing Vietnam today. journals are a bitch, i think just about everyone puts them off until the last couple days... but it was not fun, believe me. relatively easy grader though. warning that if you take this class at the same time as duttons' 156

Nguyen-Vo is one of the best professors at UCLA. I definitely found taking her Asian-Am 134 class valuable and rewarding. I came to UCLA wanting to learn and develop my critical thinking skills, and she has been the best professor so far to have challenged me to grow more as a student and as a person. The reading material can get challenging, so if you really want to learn and digest the material, you've got to spend time with it and ask questions. The professor is helpful and wants students to ask questions and engage in discussion. I always looked forward going to her class because I knew I would learn something new, whether from her or from another student through class discussion. From the posts below, I agree that she is one of the most intelligent professors I've had. She's deep, honest, and inspiring. Put in the work, and what you gain is invaluable.
