His lectures were pretty interesting but my friends would fall asleep almost every lecture if that tells you everything. He mostly reads off the slides but sometimes his explanations are important so I would recommend going to lecture or at least watching the bruincast. Actually, towards the end I realized watching the bruincast for him was better than lecture since he talks really fast over important topics sometimes.

The tests were free response and followed the format of past exams I had.

The average on the first midterm was 71. Second midterm was 80. Final was 76. Keep in mind this is not a curved class. Other than these tests there are online quizzes based off assigned pdf readigns that aren't too bad.

I managed to get an A- by studying the lecture slides and using the book to look up any concepts I didn't know or understand from him since he doesn't always explain well.

***I am selling the textbook Marine Biology by Jefferey S. Levinton fourth edition. I will also give notes and past exam keys with the book (condition: New)

Paul Barber and Jeannie Barber-Choi did their best to steer the course in the right direction given the circumstances and ultimately although it could've been better I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The classroom environment they fostered made everyone feel welcome and they are incredibly generous with extensions. They truly care about their students which is refreshing given how many classes here have hundreds of students so its hard to make those kind of connections. One of the most memorable classes I've taken in a while so shoutout to them, take the course if you're somewhat interested in the subject.

Great professor.lectures are very interesting and never boring.he shows many interesting videos and honestly it felt like he was telling a story each lecture that was interconnected with each other. He was also very cool and helpful when you spoke to him.Go to his office hours let him get to know you.Submit regrades for tests to get some point because honestly the TAs sucked and their grading was not good since they are looking for key words but if you go over your test with Dr barber and submit regrades then you can get some points back that you lost.you are only allowed to do a regrade for 2 questions but if you go to his office hour,he will go over your whole test and you can kinda get a feel of what question you can get points on.the average for the first test was very low and i feel like it was because it was graded horribly by the TAs .You don't need the book !Take very good notes and watch the lecture on bruincast. Professor barber is not looking for key words he is looking to see if you got the whole concept !the sample tests were not really helpful because they were not like the test and the discussions are mandatory but they are really pointless.I got an A in this class but studied hard and watched all the lecture over again online and completed my notes!!

This professor is looking for key words in his answers. Try making a list of some of the key things happening. This class sucks because even if you understand the key concept and can explain it, without those key words, you will lose point. He doesn't give you the list of key words either so don't expect that, otherwise it would be way too easy.

I believe the first midterm average was 50%.

Abril is a great TA for the class.

Dr. Barber is great! I'm still in the EEB 109 class right now and I have to say it's been one of my favorite classes here at UCLA.

The average of the first midterm was really low....56. But I really feel that as long as you study hard, you should be fine. Also, the practice exam answers were vague, so that might have thrown people off on what they needed to write.

Definitely recommend this professor!

Dr. Barber is what a professor should be. He is interested in getting students to learn about the things, not memorize them. In my three years here, I have yet to find a better professor. I wish there was more like him. I really feel like I have genuinely learned things because of his approach of repeating the fundamental concepts that recur through everything taught in the class. He is a phenomenal professor and he makes it easy to be interested in the class and learn.

The tests are free response and aren't looking for anything memorized. You genuinely need to know how the marine concepts work backwards and forwards to do well in the class. So if you actually want to learn, take this class.

He was great as a professor but was difficult. I got average scores all around and i barely got a B- in the class. It was a straight scale. You DO NOT need to have the textbook. It was enough to study off the slides and what he was saying in class.

Prof Barber is a good professor, but his grading scheme could use some work. If the class were curved, it would be more fair because the average scores on the exams change drastically. I found the material interesting and enjoyed the class but didn't do as well as I wanted to. Still did better than 75 percent of the class but that wasn't enough even for an A-. Would recommend taking 109.. The material itself is not difficult, but you need to score really high on everything to get an A. Even if only 5 people get above 90 on a midterm, only those 5 people get As on that exam. Beware of the straight scale....
