I took this class because it was required for the musicology minor. The class is just a 3-hour seminar once a week, with weekly discussion forum posts, a midterm project, and a final project. The final project is pretty open-ended: you can choose to do a podcast, video shorts, or traditional paper on pretty much any topic of musicology that you want to do. You also are required to "lead" discussion with a group once during the quarter for about 1 hr-1.5 hrs. I found this class pretty difficult, especially because I didn't really have a lot of background knowledge for the specific topics that the professor focused on a lot in class (ex. punk music) and found that it was pretty difficult to contribute to discussion because I felt out of place (although being on Zoom might have contributed to it). During the later weeks, there were musicologist guest speakers that came in, which I thought was pretty cool at least. I was expecting more of an introductory-level course to what the study of musicology is, but I thought this course was disorganized, disjointed, and I'm not too sure what exactly I learned after ten weeks. Probably wouldn't recommend taking this class unless it's required for your major/minor.
I only took this for the minor. It was pretty boring, I really don't feel like I got anything out of it. I did enjoy the final project, which you can kind of make your own. It's an easy class.
I took MUSICLG 13 with Professor Schwartz this winter. I never interacted with her except through the lectures, as she never really tried to communicate with us. I will say that the homeworks and assignments were confusing and just a waste of time. Decently-made lesson videos quickly devolved into a labyrinth of links, PDFs (including her own research paper, which just felt like a random plug), and full-length movies that felt sloppy, like she'd just googled the weekly topic and copied in the first ten results.
The final was fine, but I would say it felt excessive and didn't really cover the course effectively--four parts, most of which felt like they were repeating each other, and all centered around making a children's book. Didn't feel like an appropriate summation of all the complexities of punk we'd learned in the 10 weeks.
Finally, the videos were decently structured, but often felt like fever dreams. A lot of times, she would just sit and play the entire song or random music videos (Jay-Z??) then give no explanation for why we had to sit through it. Sometimes she wouldn't even bother to read the slides and would just sit in silence with them. Felt like she definitely didn't care about engaging with this course.
I took this class as preparation for the Musicology minor and really loved it. Though it's a three hour class, it's only one hour of lecture and the rest is dedicated to weekly group presentations and guest speakers. One time, preparation for class involved listening to a podcast pop musicology and the two podcast hosts were in class the next session. It was really cool. Would definitely, definitely recommend. No tests just projects and Professor Schwartz is really cool.
Easy A class but I'm sure there are ones that are less tedious than this even if this is fully online. The weekly assignments consists of a discussion post, notes on a poorly made template, text submission or sometimes drawing an image. These aren't hard to get points in as they give 100 easily but the midterm and final are pretty annoying. For the midterm you have to make a poem or song and perform it but the grading was lenient and for the final you have to make a children's book, video explanation and short paper with a partner. This sounds easy but it can take a bit of time. I would not recommend this class unless you have no more options for a GE and you have time for the projects. The professors slides and lectures were low quality especially in audio. Participation weighs alot so make sure to speak.
Definitely an easy A but not a fun class at all. It was over zoom and so many of the assignments were just on the most obscure meaningless topic that do not even really make sense. You can essentially just write whatever you want and you will receive 100% credit as long as its written in English so doing the assignments are an absolute chore. There is 0 interaction with the professor besides pre-recorded "lectures" with weird effects and editing for no reason. Take if you just want an A for a filler class but it is a little annoying.
This is a horrible class. DO NOT TAKE IT.
The most confusing, least accommodating professor I've had at UCLA. She thinks it's punk to make the least understandable/accessible video lectures I've ever seen. While getting a good grade is easy, you'll hate the process. Take a different GE.
Also, I'm not sure why her other reviews for this class are listed under MSC HST 13 instead. Read those for more detailed information on the class structure.
weird format online, and everything is due at like 12 pm, in the middle of the day. felt a lot of the assignments were unnecessary and many of her prerecorded lectures had 0 sound in them. this course could really be 5 weeks but somehow it extends into 10. the midterm requires you to write a song and write a paper about it, oh and perform it. final is a video, a book, a paper, and a presentation. be warned. it lowkey is a lot
This class was all over the place. Probably the worst managed class I have ever taken at UCLA. The professor is sweet but a bit disorganized and laggy with posting assignments and readings. It is an easy A but, if you find it hard to sit through a boring lecture don't take this class.
Took this class as a GE and the prof was nice enough to give me a PTE after it was full. Though I have no background in punk, I enjoyed the class and it gave me insight into punk music and its social views. The class was online, which was great, and allowed me to do the work whenever I wanted throughout the week (new work was usually released on monday mornings). I would def recommend this class for fun or as a GE! Final project was making your own punk book, of which I did with another student online, and I just hand drew the book and come up with the words while my classmate made the video for it, so def not hard and very manageable!
