Dr. Schriver is one of the kindest professors I have ever had at UCLA. Due to the pandemic, he has given us three hours to take an exam designed for 50 minutes to make up for possible technical problems, etc. Homework is not too difficult and doesn't take long to complete, and his lectures are super helpful in preparing you for the exam. His lectures are also very clear. Make sure to know how to solve the lecture problems and homework by yourself. You cannot go wrong with him as your professor. I'm super happy I took this course with him.
This is the first bruin walk review I've ever felt inclined to write. Dr. Schriver is the best professor I've had at UCLA in my four years here. He is so understanding and considerate,. He genuinely wants you to do well and understand the material. His lectures are amazing and super engaging, and he always gives real-life examples and applications that support the theories and laws in physics. I hated physics before this class but I love it so much now and I'm planning to take 5C with Dr. Schriver as well. The exams are closed book and notes and closed everything, but he provides an equation sheet with everything you need. The homework he assigns takes around an hour, and he assigned a total of 8 throughout the quarter. The homework reflects what he tests on, so it's great practice as well. The breakdown of the class is 15% lab, 15% homework, 20% midterm 1, 20% midterm 2, and 20% final exam. The final is cumulative, and before each exam, he holds a very helpful review session. If you struggle with physics and have the opportunity to take it with Schriver, don't even hesitate.
I will name my first born after this amazing amazing man. His tests were super easy if you just attend lecture and study a bit you will get a B or above, i would've gotten higher but i messed up the final studying to much for another class, he is so sweet, he gives a lot of partial credit and doesn't mark you off for calculation error made in part a continually in part b c d etc. when that was the only error. 10/10
Homework 15%
Laboratory 15%
Midterm 1 20%
Midterm 2 20%
Final exam 30%
This class was very straight-forward (not to be confused with easy). The practice problems in the lectures are very helpful in understanding the material. All the lecture material and homework correlates closely with the exams. The exam questions are essentially the review problems with different numbers. There was no curve on the exams or overall curve in the class.
Professor Shriver is sweet and great at explaining things.
schriver is an angel, his tests are very simple and fair and he gives a formula sheet for each which has any formula you could possibly need for the test (without giving any formulas you don't need). there were weekly homework assignments (8 total) which had 10 questions each. they're pretty straightforward and you get 10 attempts per question, with no deduction for each attempt. even when schriver's tests were a bit harder than normal, they made up for it by offering insanely generous partial credit. the final exam was not cumulative so it just covered between midterm 2 and week 10's content. overall, i would say it is difficult to get anything But an a in this class, he really wants you to succeed and the exams are exactly like his class review sessions (which he does during the regularly scheduled lecture). he also cancelled a lot of lectures which was nice.
attendance in discussion is optional, the ta basically just goes over a couple problems and then the rest of the time is used for homework questions. you can also attend any other discussion time even if you are not enrolled in it. no attendance is taken and it was in a big room so it was very easy to attend a different section if needed.
labs were sometimes kind of confusing in terms of the steps you had to follow and the computer programs but the LAs and TA should help you, and my TA at least was a very lenient grader so i never lost any points on anything even if it wasn't 100% accurate. but that's TA dependent i guess.
