I LOVE Professor Schriver!! His midterms were really similar to his past midterms. He provides ALL the equations you need for the exams. He also gives a review before each exam which is really helpful because he basically tells you the type of problems that will be on them. The only thing that was difficult for me was finishing the midterms in 50 minutes. The final was slightly harder than the midterms.
My grades:
Midterm 1: 84/100 Average: 80, SD: 15
Midterm 2: 87/100 Average: 76, SD: 15
Final: 175/200
MP: 10/10 (He gives full credit for MP even if you get some attempts wrong)
Labs: 15/15
Final Grade: A-
He didn't curve the final or the class very much for the A range. I know there was a slight curve for the B+/B range. If you struggled in 5a and 5b you can be successful in 5c with Schriver. TAKE HIM!<3
This is a review for 5C since he does not have a page for it yet.
A pretty straightforward class. You have online homework due every week, annoying/long physics labs of course, and discussions are optional (I did not go to any.)
The exams are pretty straightfoward, but unfortunately, both midterms are very very high speed. You will have 20+ physics problems in 50 minutes. I did okay on the first midterm, but I did not even finish the second midterm and got a pretty bad score :(
At least for the midterms and finals he gives you an equation sheet with EVERY EQUATION LABELLED. Like, a question will say, "what's the De Broglie wavelength of this atom..." and you go to the equation sheet and find one that is labelled "De Broglie wavelength." This makes things a lot less confusing and was a nice touch. That being said, it's not all plug and chug, you will still have to manipulate some different equations.
Overall, a pretty okay class, the only reason I got a B+ is the second midterm I could not go fast enough on. He is a nice grandpa kind of dude. Would recommend, unless you have a choice of taking someone with easier exams.
I don't know about him being hard or not, but Schriver definitely is not as easy as people say he is, and the grade distribution shown is definitely not accurate.
The person two comments below me may be skeptical, but Schriver is not easy and not hard. When I took him, I thought he would be a walk in the park, just like the previous two physics classes. I ended up with an A- in the class (my only A- in my undergraduate career).
The class does take a lot of time, and you do need to put in a lot of work. If you're one of the students who likes to cram a week before a test, the class probably isn't for you. A lot of my friend took Gutperle (not sure if that's right), and they seemed pleased with him. He also does not teach very well, so if you're pre-med and looking to take the MCAT anytime soon, you won't be prepared AT ALL.
I wouldn't recommend him. Take him only if you really have to... the reviews given (both good and bad) are not accurate reviews of his class from last spring. Oh yeah, and his final is fucking ridiculous (not fair, and a total curve ball compared to his midterms.
He isnt an insanely difficult professor because he gives all the equations you need, his tests are problem based, and he teaches. Take this class with him if you can, makes physics easier. You do need to study though. Do the homework and pay attention in reviews, get past exams, and youll be good.
His lectures were clear and the exams were fair. The test problems are pulled out from the lectures. If you can solve the lecture problems then you will get an A

so you're telling me that you've graduated from UCLA (seeing as how you're done with your undergraduate work) and decided to come back and give Schriver a negative review the week of class enrollment? seems 100% legit.
Dr Schriver is the absolute best. I would definitely recommend taking this class with him. He uses slides and studying his slides and doing all the problems on them would be enough. The tests are very fair and the TAs are fair graders. There is no extra credit in this class but if you do the homework which is not hard at all and take the tests you can easily get an A in this class. Just make sure to attend the review sessions because they are a huge help.
Super chill class. I started studying for both of the midterms like 2-3 days before the midterms and ended with a 100 in the class. Just do Mastering Physics, the questions on his slides, and the review session questions and you're good to go. He offers an equation sheet during the tests, the questions are really fair, and he offers very lenient partial credit. I'd say the only concern is finishing the midterms in the allotted time, because you only have 50 minutes for those. Take his class!
This man is incredible! He made physics so clear and easy! His dad jokes and small laughs in class were incredibly pure. He handled the COVID-19 situation so well and was always patient with us. He is a snazzy dresser (khakis and dad jeans on fleek tbh). The exams were very fair and he is the ONLY STEM professor that actually tests us on material he said would be on the test. I was shook that he actually followed through.
THIS IS A GOOD MAN. A GOAT.
This man is the greatest and most caring professor I've ever taken at UCLA. He doesn't want to ruin anyone's GPA and will actually teach you physics. Great guy. Gave everyone an A on the final when COVID hit.
