BEST CLASS I'VE TAKEN AT UCLA!!! Professor Korb is such a good teacher. All of his lectures are clear and concise. The exams are straightforward and never have material that hadn't been discussed in lecture or in the readings. I took this class as a GE and I don't regret it at all. There was only one midterm and it was relatively easy. Korb gives us a study guide, and if you can fill it out without too much help you're pretty much guaranteed an A on the exams. I would recommend including a short description of the readings on your study guide too because there will also be questions about that. All of the assignments were "weekly interventions" where you conduct a mini experiment on yourself and then write a small writeup due before your discussion section. Professor Korb gives you and outlines and an example of what these logs should look like, and the TAs are super super helpful if you have any questions. The final paper is one huge log where you compare the results of the interventions that you've completed so far to one outcome variable. The instructions for the final paper aren't as clear as the weekly log, but follow the same type of direction. Again, if you have any questions the TAs are so so kind and are always willing to help you. My TA was Amanda, and wow she was so amazing I literally don't know how to put it in words. Participation is also important in determining your final grade which means you have to show up for discussion section and actively participate. At first I was worried how it would go especially with everything being online, but there is plenty of opportunities to participate and contribute to sections. This class was genuinely interesting. There was a time where I would refuse to consider a science major, but this class really made me consider it.
BEST CLASS AT UCLA. Easiest science GE ever. SOOOO interesting,, made me consider studying neuroscience. Dr. Korb is the best, so sweet, so funny, very smart. Overall best guy. You won't regret!!
Bar none the best class I've taken at UCLA. It's the kind of class that has incredible real-world value, where if you put in effort into learning the material and techniques, you will literally improve your life. This class has no "gotchas," it's not designed to trick you, and you learn invaluable insights into the mind along the way. It's abundantly clear that Dr. Korb genuinely cares about his students, and his book, while not necessary, is a great read if the topics interest you. For all the qualms we can have about UCLA and the bureaucracy of the institution, this is the kind of class that makes you think how incredible of an opportunity it is to attend a place like this. If only every course was like this one...
If you want an easy GE grade, you can get that. If you want a life-changing college experience, you can get that too. 10/10 would recommend for everyone.
If I had the choice to take this class again taught by any other professor at UCLA, I would. The material is very interesting and applicable to life. If my choices were lose sight permanently in my left eye or take this class with Korb again, i’m wearing an eye patch until my dying day. Be warned that some of the previous reviews aren’t true anymore - tests are not open note, but they are on Respondus. Test averages were pretty low so if you remember one thing, remember that the tests mostly focus on the actual brain regions and neuroscience stuff, not the larger ideas behind studies (even though that gets the most lecture time). My vendetta is simply that I found Korb to be the most grating lecturer I’ve ever had. The class isn’t hard as long as you keep up with work and know what to study for the tests - I do think the grading scheme was very forgiving which is nice - but I just didn’t like Korb as a lecturer and I’m reviewing him too.
This class is awesome. I have learned so much stuff about the human brain that is actually applicable to my life. The lectures are kind of long and tedious, but not really vital to the tests, I just find them interesting. Discussion attendance matters but they usually end early and are pretty quick paced. Perfect workload, 10/10 class.
Lecture and discussion attendance is part of your grade, which consists of iClicker questions. You don't have to get them correct, just answer them before he closes it. Lecture is recorded. Material is pretty interesting and applicable to real life, but some of it is just common sense. Science part wasn't super difficult and only required memorization. However, lecture was very long, so I didn't really pay attention. Make sure to write down what he says during lecture since the slides don't have much information. Midterm was 50 multiple choice questions with Lockdown Browser online. Final wasn't cumulative and was the same format. As long as you study some of the stuff he says, you'll be fine. During the entire course, you fill out a Google Form about a certain intervention (exercise, social media, etc.) and answer questions about your mood, sleep, etc. At the end of the weekly interventions, there is a log paper where you write about your intervention with your intro, methods, results, and discussion. These were very easy and took an hour to finish. The final paper was just a longer log paper and was also easy as well. Grading scheme: 20% Participation, 20% Midterm, 20% Final, 20% Log Paper and Entries, 20% Final Paper. Overall, very easy GE
A unique class. Obviously, Prof Korb teaches the class well, as it's a class based on his work. If you do the weekly interventions, this class can genuinely help you improve your life. I will warn, however, that this is a science class at the end of the day and when I took it, it was more difficult than in the past because exams were closed note.
I'm sure anyone reading the reviews of this class has already been told it is super easy, so let me give you the most recent rundown of this class.
Structure:
Participation (literally just showing up to discussion) - 20%
Daily logging (literally completing daily questionnaire about yourself) - 10%
Weekly log (1 page write up about results found in daily logs) - 10%
Final Paper (A bigger weekly log, you can literally copy and paste) - 20%
Midterm - 20%
Final - 20%
Class:
PSA PLEASE READ THIS: the midterm and final are no longer open note. I took this class and went into the midterm thinking it was very easy, so I did not study, and it definitely caught me off-guard. However, if I was prepared, like I was for the final, I would have done much better. This class is a bit more work than it seems on Bruinwalk, however, all of the work is either very easy or very interesting. The material covered is super engaging and very easy to learn for the tests. The cheat code to this class is literally just writing down most of what comes out of his mouth onto a notes doc, and then just reviewing that. Overall it is a pretty easy class, just not the cakewalk that Bruinwalk reviews have made it seem.
Professor:
Korb really makes the class. I would take this class every quarter for the rest of my life if Korb was teaching it. He is very funny, super caring, and an all around amazing guy who is teaching this course to help all his students improve their lives. I picked up so many good habits from this class, I have never felt better. The dude is actually so awesome and will be a ray of sunshine during lecture days.
Please take this class, but understand it is not going to be NO work. I probably spent an hour per week doing stuff for this class, so there is a decent amount of work, and then lectures are recorded so not even a need to go, although going does really help.
this class genuinely changed my life
