What a great class
Take this class!! Get the Upward Spiral book. Go for lectures cause they're the best part of the class.
Pretty easy and a nice professor. He does ramble in his lectures sometimes which can get a bit boring.
This is the type of class you expect to come into when you enter college. Korb is a very nice guy and right off the bat you can tell that he cares about his students. He isn't just teaching information for you to memorize. He's teaching relatively simple concepts that you can apply to your own life. He is by far my favorite professor I've had so far at UCLA.
DR. KORB IS THE BEST. Like seriously, such an inspirational professor, he clearly cares so much about his students, their well-being, and learning, I couldn't say enough good things about him. His lectures are funny and engaging, and I loved the topics he chose to speak on. Also, his story about writing his book and creating this class because of a student he coached on the girls' ultimate frisbee team who committed suicide really touched me. This man is a literal angel and I'm so glad I got to take a class with him.
The class itself was also super manageable, he made all of the neuroscience easy to understand, and his book, The Upward Spiral, is a fantastic resource. Tests were straightforward, the interventions we did each week were really engaging, and the lab write-ups we did for them were fairly simple. The final paper was also super manageable because he gives us so much time to prepare for it and clearly outlined what he expected from us.
My TA, Amanda Johnson, was also a godsend. I took this class while UCLA was first transitioning to online learning because of the covid-19 pandemic and she was so supportive and considerate of this. She really went above and beyond, and even reached out to me personally when she noticed my mood scores from the google forms were low (you fill out google forms every week to monitor your results from the interventions). I can't even begin to describe how thankful I was for her support during the chaos of the pandemic.
Overall, all I have to say is TAKE THIS CLASS. It will seriously teach you coping strategies that will help you throughout the rest of your life, and is an incredible resource to have as an undergraduate. It is definitely a GPA booster and one of the best laid out classes I have taken at UCLA yet. And, if anything, take it for the fact that Dr. Korb is truly an inspiration, and probably one of the best people you will ever encounter in not only your academic career, but life.
Take this class. If there was any class that I could re-take again and again it would be this one, hands down. If you're debating whether or not to take this class, don't, take it. Even through remote instruction it was clear that Dr. Korb cares about his students and about the work he's instructing. He made neuroscience understandable for someone who has never been science-inclined. Not only did he make it understandable, he made it FUN and APPLICABLE. I learned so much about not only how to understand my wellbeing, but the underlying neuroscience that takes part in every aspect of my life. It isn't science terminology heavy, it's strategically applicable to everyone. This is seriously one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA, if not the best.
Take this class! It was very insightful and Professor Korb is quite knowledgeable. The workload is quite light and pretty fun. The midterm and final for us were open note.
This was truly one of my favorite classes that I have taken at UCLA thus far. As a senior, I was looking for an easy GE to fulfill units and this class went above and beyond. While there is some material based on neuroscience, the majority of the class was more about the overall nature of mindfulness and mindfulness practices. Each week you have a new intervention and the workload that corresponds with them is not much at all. The tests are very straightforward, coming from his lecture material. Overall, definitely take this class, even if you don't need the units, as this is one that can really change your daily routine for the better.
12/10. This class is absolutely amazing! Dr. Korb does a great job integrating neuroscience and application to daily life. There is daily logging and weekly journals, which aren't bad at all if you actually are interested in changing habits and bettering yourself. I took this class online, and even with that, Dr. Korb found a way to make lectures entertaining. There are 2 books for the class, definitely buy The Upward Spiral, but you can skip buying Difficult Conversations.
The prof is great and the class is interesting. This is the only class I haven't gotten an A in unfortunately. TA couldn't explain why she took off points for my final paper (randomly took off a ton for the intro and none for the remainder of the paper). The material itself is interesting and the assignments are straight-forward. I would suggest taking to Korb about your final paper so you don't end up surprised by what the TA decides to do.
