Art of Film Adaptation
Description: Seminar, three hours. Engagement with current debates and key theoretical texts about film adaptation. Exploration of art of film adaptation in broad sense, including transformation of short stories, plays, novels, historical accounts, biographies, paintings, musical compositions, or philosophical concepts into multilayered medium of cinema. Adaptations addressed include selection of films from range of cultural and linguistic traditions by directors such as Kiarostami, Varda, Kurosawa, Babenco, Rossellini, Hitchcock, Antonioni, Kieslowski, and Taymor. Specific directors, films, and cinematic traditions vary year to year. P/NP or letter grading.

Fall 2026 - Professor Sutherland is amazing! This class was my favourite in the whole quarter. The professor is so passionate about Film and Literature and that makes the class super fun. It requires watching about 1 film a week and then spending time analysing and discussing it in class. There are 2 papers (2 pages each), 1 presentation (15mins), and 1 final paper. The class depends a lot on how the rest of the students are, if they are engaged, it makes the discussion fruitful. Definitely recommend it. Very chill workload and time commitment as it only happens once a week.
