Fall 2023 - One thing I appreciated about this class was this: I felt Professor Wang was always honest but considerate with her feedback, as it never felt like a personal attack. She conveyed it in a way that felt as if she could see your potential to turn something good into something great. I would say for burgeoning writers looking for a mentor who is not overly harsh or critical, Professor Wang is perfect. And as long as you show genuine effort with every assignment and/or short story you write, then you receive an A in the class. I wouldn't say it's easy. Rather, you get the grade you deserve so long as you do everything you should and actively participate in the weekly workshops.

Winter 2026 - I absolutely LOVED this class and would recommend everyone take it if you can get it, and especially if you are Asian-American. I happened to enroll in this class because I thought the title sounded interesting, and I think I have genuinely come out of this class a better thinker and reader. I have never read very much Asian-American literature before this course, and I was really surprised at how much the texts we read impacted me, and how much I resonated with everything we read. The workload is a bit heavy as we read 1 full book a week (around 6 total), but I found this to be really manageable because I was flying through each assigned text because I just genuinely enjoyed reading them. The professor is so so kind and caring you can tell she truly cares about her students, our learning, and reading/writing (especially Asian-American literature). I can wholeheartedly say that this is my all time favorite English class I have ever taken, and I think I have come out of changed for the better. This class does get very personal and everyone gets to know each other pretty well. Our final papers/presentations are very intimate and relevant to each individual person, so I would say do not take this class unless you are truly interested in it, and are willing to put in the work to produce work that is really special and honest to you. I created a bruinwalk account just to write a review for this class, and I truly wish that this class didn't have to end! I haven't even gotten my final grade yet, but I just need people to know how amazing this class is. Professor Wang is also so helpful in office hours + we have mandatory 1:1 conferences to go over our papers together towards the end of the quarter. Professor Wang is probably one of the first, and maybe the only person who has ever made me feel like becoming a writer is something that is possible.
