I didn't learn jack shit about architecture, but I know a hell of a lot more about colonialism now! If you like social justice and vaguely interconnected, borderline nonsensical lectures, this is the class for you!

I took this class during 'rona quarter, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but good fucking lord this is the weirdest class I've ever taken. You only have five assignments plus a midterm and a final, so everything is pretty easy, but you will NOT understand the writing prompts at all. The upside is that the TAs/Prof are very lenient graders and will happily give you credit for 300 words of well-sourced nonsense.

I know many of my classmates did have issues with not getting ANY grades back until week 8, which was really shitty, but other than that the professor was very nice. He's genuinely excited about everything he's teaching even if the words coming out of his mouth make very little sense. Also, if you take a shot every time he says "strange" you'll black 5 mins into lecture.

TL;DR: had no idea what was going on and got good grades on every assignment anyways.

really interesting materials and gives me a different perspective in architecture as well as history. Professor Davis is so engaging. I always enjoyed his lectures as a break from my other STEM classes. We have short writing assignments weekly except midterm week and final week total 5 writing assignments(300 words). They are really fun to write: manifesto, time travel journal, exhibition introduction etc. If you pay attention in lecture, do the readings, the assignments won't be challenging. The TA I had was Luke Fiederer. He gave us really interesting insights and random facts! This is my favorite GE by far! 100% strongly recommend.

He uses lecture slides with mostly pictures but does not include really anything of what he says in the slides. The lectures weren't that engaging and sometimes he asks a question and waits until someone finally answers. If you don't go to the lecture and want to review the slides, there's not really much to be found except the names of the places and people he talked about. Midterm review was given but only because of the measles incident at this time of the year, no review was given for the final but a cutoff for topics was given. Midterm and final were identical, consisting of a fill in the blank with a word bank, choosing to define one of three given terms, a map with locations needed to be identified and an essay on two images shown during the test (images come from slides). Pretty easy GE from my experience.

This professor exhibited vast knowledge on the history of architecture. Additionally, he did a great job in teaching us interesting material in a unique way. He centered his teaching every week around a specific theme. As for the tests, they were not very difficult if you studied. Also, the handouts he gave out every week, which some TAs suggested we use to study for the tests, were not very helpful. Lastly, there was very little homework.

Very interesting class, indeed. I did find Professor Davis to be a bit confusing at times. I remember one time when a student asked a question, but the professor didn't really end up answering the question. He kind of got lost in his own world of knowledge.

I learned a lot about architecture but at the same time I don't know what I learned. He breaks the weeks into different topics but everything just felt very disconnected. Regardless, the material itself was very interesting and Prof. Davis is extremely knowledgeable. Easy GE, but your TA matters!

Easiest GE ever. I took this class during the pandemic so it was online. Lectures were recorded as a podcast and the prof used slides with mostly images. The content was very unique and interesting but sometimes the prof got off track and started talking about things that had nothing to do with the content. Discussions were led by TAs and were very chill. I had Joy and she would basically just talk about whatever she thought was interesting that slightly related to what we had covered in class. During the entire quarter, we had 5 short writing assignments, also very easy (the lowest possible grade was a 95%). The midterm was a longer essay. The final was supposed to be the same format but it became optional and I'm pretty sure very few students actually turned it in. Overall, totally recommend this as an easy GE.

My only issue with this professor is that he is VERY vague. He uses a lot of flowery jargon, which makes it very difficult to understand what he is trying to say in lectures. I will admit that he is really nice, and responds to emails quickly which is a huge plus! If you have to take this course for your major (or even in general), I would recommend Luke as a TA. He is super helpful in explaining the material and concepts from lecture and provides really good discussion and insight!

This is the best class I have taken at UCLA so far. Professor Davis really seemed to love what he was teaching, and the content was interesting and overall pretty easy to understand. The exams (one midterm and one final, during weeks 5 and 10, respectively) were very easy; one part consisted of geography and vocabulary identification and the other part was a long essay. I made a few mistakes on the essay but my TA was kind enough to go through them, and I felt more confident writing my essay during the final. Participation does matter, but the discussions are worth your time in helping you understand the material on a deeper level. Additionally, there were five reading responses due throughout the quarter that were based on the readings, but if you took the time to finish both of the readings and come up with a concise argument about them it would be pretty easy to score a 10/10. Overall it was a very easy and fun class, and I would definitely take it again with Will! It's also a great historical analysis GE if you still need to complete one.
