Will Conley is the GOAT. The midterms were very reflective of what we were learning in class.
Nothing was unfairly graded in my opinion and it seemed like the grading was actually done in a way to give the student the highest possible score with the work that was turned in. The homework is a bit more difficult than the worksheets and tests, but this actually helped me to further understand the course material. Conley is extremely nice and always provided resources that allowed us to succeed in Math 31AL. I would 100% recommend him to anyone.

Professor Conley is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is incredibly clear and thorough with his teaching. He's also very understanding and helpful for anyone who gets lost or confused. His prerecorded lectures taught me so many concepts that I really struggled to grasp in high school. I HIGHLY recommend taking any course he teaches.

Professor Conley is THE BEST. He is one of the few teachers I have had so far at UCLA that genuinely wants all students to pass his class. Conley goes above and beyond to help his students succeed. He is generous with grading and attendance considering it is virtual and much harder. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned a lot. If you ever get the chance to one of his classes you should!

Professor Conley is one of the best teachers I have ever had. If I could take every math class with him I would. He is a very clear speaker and his lectures are very helpful. Homework is completed on Sapling. During COVID he allowed us to have infinite tries on the problems. He assigns challenging questions, but if you go to office hours he can show you how to properly complete them.
His midterms were challenging for me and I failed the first one. But this was because I didn't attend his review session and I didn't spend much time on the provided practice exams. For the 2nd Midterm and Final I went to the review sessions and completed the practice exams. They are very similar to the actual tests. Definitely take advantage of his review sessions. He puts a lot of time into them, sometimes spending 4 hours going over material and answering everyone's questions. He gave us 24 hours to complete the exams. I took about 5 hours on the final because I tend to make silly mistakes but the review sessions and practice tests prepare you well.
Professor Conley allows for 2 grading schemes and chooses whichever one will give you a better grade. Since I did well on the 2nd midterm and final he dropped my 1st midterm (which I failed) and I was able to pull through with an A-. There are also short quizzes every week. I did ok on them, but if you do well you can get a few extra points with them.
If you have the chance to take a math class with Professor Conley definitely do it. He is such a dedicated and approachable teacher. He also showed us his dogs at the end of the final review session, which was nice after 5 hours of reviewing material. If you do not do well in this class it is because you are not taking advantage of all of the resources Mr. Conley provides.

If Peter Parker became a math professor. Conley was extremely accommodating with the online learning format. He didn't make live lectures or discussions mandatory, recorded his lectures, etc. He stays over his scheduled office hours time to help out students and even gave a 5 hour review session for the final.

Since this is technically the second time I'm taking this course (I took AP Calc AB in high school but didn't get a 5 on the exam), the course was manageable for me. However, the difference between my high school teacher and Conley is night and day. While my high school teacher wasn't bad, I never felt like I fully grasped the material based on her lectures alone. With Conley, I had a significantly deeper understanding of the material because he explains topics so that you understand them conceptually.

Great professor and great guy, I felt lucky to have him as a professor.

I technically didn't need to take this class since I got a 5 on AP Calc, but I had self-studied for the test in like 4 days and felt like I didn't really know the material, so I thought it would be better to take this class so that I'm not lost in Math 31B. A lot of people told me that it would be a waste of time, but I'm glad I didn't listen to them. I found this class very valuable and helpful. Conley gave engaging lectures and he explained the concepts very clearly and did a lot of examples. He went above and beyond, as he held 4-5 hour long review sessions before each exam just to help us out. I thought the review sessions were very helpful; before each exam, I only watched the recorded review session and nothing else, and was able to get 100 on all the tests. So even if you feel comfortable with the material, I'd recommend the review sessions, as the examples he goes over are very similar to the material on the actual tests. He also gave us optional practice tests before each test.

As for participation, lecture attendance isn't mandatory but discussion attendance is. However, attending discussion only accounts for 5% of your grade. During each discussion, there is a worksheet to do. The worksheets took me about 40-60 minutes each. The lowest one gets dropped. Worksheets comprise 10% of the grade, and the lowest two are dropped. I personally found the worksheets to be helpful.

There is also homework on Achieve about once a week. One thing I found a bit annoying was that the homework was due a different day each week; it would have been nicer to have a constant day/time it was due. The homework problems are much harder than what is covered in class IMO, but we get unlimited attempts and a wrong attempt doesn't really decrease your grade a lot, so it's overall not that hard to do well on the homework, especially if you use GroupMe. The lowest homework gets dropped. Each homework usually took me about 2 hours, but the harder ones took me 3-4. The homeworks are 15% of the grade total. There was a homework due on finals week which was really not cool, but I emailed Conley for an extension and he allowed it.

The exams were alright; they weren't as hard as the homework. But for us they were 24 hour online open-note tests, so I'm pretty sure they'd be harder in person.

There are two schemes for grading. In the first, the two midterms are 20% each and the final is 30%. In the second, the highest of the two midterms is 30% (the lower is 0%) and the final is 40%. This means that if you do really poorly on one of the midterms, you can still get a good grade.
