As an entering freshman struggling already in Math previously in high school, I was able to enroll into Professor Conley's Fall Quarter Math 31A class. Despite not checking bruinwalk beforehand, it was absolutely a great decision. My high school experience wasn't great and so it made me lose a lot of confidence in my ability in solving a math problem throughout the years. However, entering Professor Conley's totally changed my perspective of math. He is genuinely a great guy who truly wants people to learn and actually understand the concept he teaches. Although he may go a little slow during his lectures and such, I honestly didn't mind because it helped me to understand the concept even more, thus increasing my confidence. Furthermore, he is definitely for his students. He is willing to go beyond the allotted time (during office hours and midterms/final reviews) for students who are struggling with a particular topic. Although I did get a C, I blame it on myself for not studying hard enough and has nothing to do with Conley's teaching AT ALL.
Conley was an excellent professor. He was patient and explained things really slowly his workload is very low and instead of turning in homework you take quizzes each week. The final and midterm exams are a lot harder than the homework so you can't blow it off. Overall great class and I'm excited to take 31B with him.
I was very fortunate to have Will Conley as my professor for 31A. He was very clear in his explanations, and always made sure that you understood completely. The only bad thing I would say is that having taken the course equivalent in high school, his class seemed to go by very slowly and his explanations became very time-consuming. As a matter of fact, we actually didn't cover a few topics in integration that are necessary for 31B. Overall a very good professor.
Great class and great professor
You will need the textbook so if you havent bought it yet I am selling my textbook Rogawski second edition with binder included. No notes or highlights, and in mint condition. Text me at ********** I can meet on or around campus. Selling for$50 with price negotiable.
Conley is probably one of the best professors I've had to date. He cares a lot about his students and wants to make sure that they understand the material he is teaching. His review sessions don't really have an end time, he always stays until all of the questions are answered. He is very clear in lectures and his tests don't throw curveballs or ridiculously tricky questions in your direction.
I would definitely take all math classes with him if he taught them.
Conley is a really good teacher. Answering math questions via e-mail is not the easiest task, yet he responded to my math questions (and those of my friends) with really detailed explanations. He also spend about 3 hours at each exam review going over what would be on the mid-terms and final. The guy wants the students to do well in the class.
You still have to know the material, though. The class covers a lot of material and much of it builds upon the last concept, so my advice would be to do all the HW assignments and make sure you really know the material before Conley introduces a new concept in the next lecture.
His office hours were pretty crowded, but he's very willing to make one-on-one appointments if you need help.
His grading is fair; he's willing to throw out the worst of your two midterms and uses a generous curve. I did pretty poorly on the mid-terms, but got a 89% on the final and earned a B+ in the class.
Conley's good.
