Do yourself a favor and take this course with Professor Howard! He is beyond one of the most caring, respectful, and compassionate professors I have had at my time at UCLA. He's always there to listen to students and invites all to his office hours to discuss the course further or just to chat about life. My TA was Destiny, and she was a great addition to the course! The course consisted of 3 GQR's--short one-page, single-spaced responses to the readings due every two weeks--a midterm that was 5-6 pages double, spaced that involved incorporating the readings and connecting them to your own school experience and how your race, class, and gender all played a role, and lastly, a final. The final was a research paper of 6-8 pages double-spaced with a topic and research question of your choice. I would recommend this course to anyone who needs a requirement for the education studies minor or education major--even those who need a GE would enjoy this course. This course has changed the way I think about my schooling experience and the others around me. It was a pleasure to have Professor Howard during such an unprecedented time of COVID.

Quarter: Fall 2023
Grade: A+

Dr. Howard is the best professor I have had at UCLA. He keeps an entire lecture hall engaged, and talking with "turn and talk" where you discuss with your nearby classmates and then discuss as a class. He teaches graduate students, and it shows because he will get you fired up about education! He doesn't just talk the talk; he is also concerned with his students. He listens and pushes assignments for the entire class, if necessary. This is a professor who wants you to succeed and understand that educational inequalities hurt everyone. If there is a must-take class, this would be it. I would absolutely take any other class he teaches...unfortunately, this is the only class he teaches undergrads, and only in the Fall. If you are fortunate enough to get him, do so.
There is a midterm paper and a final paper, but there are no Scantron tests. The Final can be written individually or with a partner. If you want to really understand education, take his class. Just know you may end up changed, and maybe even change your major. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Please do yourself a favor and take a class with Dr. Howard. He is one of the most brightest and nicest person you will ever meet. He seems to genuinely want everyone in his class to not just succeed but to LEARN the truth about race, class, and education inequality. I found this class really interesting and actually helped me become more passionate about education. It was a really interesting class so it didn't seem like a lot of work. I took this class when things went remote due to COVID so maybe my experience with Dr.Howard was different, but he is genuinely a caring person. If you don't take the class or him, take it for the content (it's super interesting and applicable to real life). There was one group assignment for discussion which was a presentation on that weeks reading (not difficult at all) , a midterm and a final. The midterm was really easy (about us in terms of identity in education --> race, class, gender etc in education ). This class deserved a review!

Dr. Howard was one of the best professors, I've had at UCLA. He continued to make students feel welcome and accepted in class. Education 130 allowed me to understand how our society works in relation to Race, Class, and Gender.

Professor Howard is an amazing professor who cares for his students. I am a transfer student and since going to UCLA, he has been the best professor so far and makes me want to take a minor in education. He practices what he preaches, during COVID and the protest, he made sure to take care of his students and provide academic support. I would highly recommend taking him, you learn so much.

Dr. Howard is without a doubt the best professor I've ever had. He is INCREDIBLY understanding of students and made so many needed accommodations throughout the quarter. He's a greater lecturer and example in the education field and would take this class again in a heartbeat. Several students and the professor were all teary the last day of class because of it ending. I couldn't have a higher recommendation for this class and professor

Professor Howard was one the most passionate lecturers I have taken. He really values the issues surrounding education and has inspired me to pursue a career path regarding education. I learned a lot from his class and discussion was very interactive as well. I'd take him again for another class.

Howard is a very passionate and caring professor. The course material is also fascinating and really sheds light onto the structure of America's education system. The class was once a week for approx. 4 hours - 2 in lecture with Howard and then 2 with your TA. Because of this, I think the overall enjoyability of the class is dependent on your TA. I had Alan G. who wasn't helpful at all and made the class really frustrating for me. His sections were extremely monotonous (exact same agenda every week for two hours), he was horrible at responding to emails/getting assignments back in a timely manner, and office hours were a waste of time because it didn't feel like he actually wanted to help you.
I recommend the class because of Howard (who is amazing), but try to get a good TA so you can get the most out of the course.

Professor Howard was a phenomenal instructor! This was my first introduction to the Education Minor and I have to say the content is one that was different from my Psychology course content. His lectures were engaging and informative along with dedicated TA's. The forum of dialogue that was implemented in Education 132 made students critically think about issues that need to be addressed. Without a doubt even if you are not an Education minor take this class to expand your horizons and become more aware of race, class, and inequality within school systems! :)

I had the pleasure of taking Professor Howard's Education 130 class in the Fall 2014. This was by far one of the best classes and professors I have ever had! It was a great pleasure to have that class as my first quarter experience here at UCLA. He gives off such amazing energy and interacts with his students, making them feel a part of the class. I highly recommend taking this class or any class with Professor Howard! By far my favorite professor!
