wow... do take a class with him, go to his office hours, talk to him and get to know him, he is THE most awesome prof you'll ever get to know here. totally cool, really great sense of humor, wonderful and very relevant stories relate to lecture and readings, love the exclamation marks!! loved the sloths and the coati and the porcupine and the fennic fox! i would probably never have had the chance to see them up close and personal like that if it weren't for his class.
WOW! take as many of his classes as you can, easy reading, good lectures, covers everything you need to know, really flexible with students and totally accessible and easy to talk to, lab's a breeze, if you're in love with Hawaii and the tropics and every cool place on the planet this is the class & prof for you! like he says, as long as you go to lecture and you don't have a nasty heroine addiction there's NO way you can't get an A in his class.

I took this class first quarter of my Freshman year to fulfill a physical science GE requirement. BEST CLASS EVER. I looked forward to going to lecture because Prof. Gillespie was so entertaining and funny. I've never had so much fun in a class and I've never had such a genuinely interesting Professor. He is so enthusiastic about the material that my attention never wandered. The content is extremely easy and there is almost no outside work required other than reviewing for the midterm and final and one group project. Despite this, you're still learning a ton! I cannot stress it enough, TAKE THIS CLASS. You won't regret it and you'll have such a fun time learning about some interesting environmental concepts.

I took him for geog 111 and geog 5. I plan to take as many classes with him as possible while I am here at UCLA. He is an inspiration. He is so passionate about these topics. A class based mainly on memorization and identifying trees some how became fun and interesting. 10/10 suggest taking his class!

Although everyone said he is easy, I ended up a bad grade in this class.
Compare to other classes, this class is relatively fewer readings. This class is mostly based on what Professor Gillespie is saying in class.
There is no hw assignments, one midterm worths 30%, final 40% and a group project 25%, the remaining 5% is an Aquarium field trip.
I am not a person that good at recongizing living things. And his test is easy for most of the people because you only have to recongize the types of fishes/trees/corals he talked about in class. I did really bad on this part and most of my points lost on this part in my midterm. I would recommend this class because he is funny in class and he is really helpful during office hour. He knew I did badly on midterm but he didn't ignore or give up his student. I appreciate Dr. Gillespie a lot!

Do NOT take this class if you actually want even the slightest understanding of how to use ENVI and how to perform remote sensing. This is by far the most USELESS class I've taken at UCLA. Two hour long sessions where I sat there and wondered with my friend what we were supposed to be getting out of this.
For several lectures he taught us random facts about remote sensing that we needed to know for the midterm, but they could easily have been reviewed in an hour, MAX.
We had weekly 'labs' to teach us how to use ENVI, however we only ended up doing two throughout the whole quarter and each lab only required us to use at most 2 operations in ENVI.
The end result is that no one comes out of the class being able to say that they have even a basic familiarity with ENVI. If this class was structured like UCLA's GIS classes, this remote sensing class would be pretty solid. It unfortunately isn't and we're all stuck pretending like a class is worth it just because Gillespie is teaching it.
