Be prepared to do ALOT of reading! Pop quizzes are easy if you keep up with all the required readings and movies. The essays are pretty manageable as long as you understand the concepts from the readings. Professor Anderson does give interesting lectures on this subject. The class is easy as long as you do the heavy workload of readings.

Do not take this class or any class with Anderson. Boring lecturer, disengaging, save your time and money.

Great professor, great class. You think you're woke? Think again.

Set up:
Class Discussion Participation: 20% / 2% per week
Pop Quizzes (Best 4/5): 20% / 5% each
Project Gender at the Mall: 15%
Project Gender & Power: 20%
Final Essay: 25%

Quizzes are on lecture, movies, readings, links. This class has heavy readings but super interesting!
T.A.'s grade fairly and are very helpful.

Getting an A is achievable as long as you do all the readings. Including watching the films.

Books are expensive
- Kaleidoscope $95
- Gender Outlaw $12
- Men Explain Things to Me $10
- Course Reader $?? (Maybe 40)

I have the first three books - loose leaf. Selling all 3 for only $40.
The course reader is on reserve at Powell.

Everything you need to know about her course is reviewed below, but Anderson was so great I felt another review was necessary. Yes, the syllabus can be it's own textbook and the workload is intense -- a lot of "busy work" (damn those weekly journals) that even seemed unnecessary at times -- but I learned so much. If you were to ask me what I gained, I could talk for hours.

Anderson herself is very approachable and cares for her students' learning. She might even be Super Woman (and you just might see why when/if you take her). She invites guest speakers and shows documentaries/films often which was great because I honestly didn't find her lectures very engaging (she reads off a paper). My TA was just OK and seemed to focus more on the structure of our projects and essays rather than the content. We once spent a whole discussion hour talking paragraph formations, works cited, and other things we all should have learned in high school. That was a complete bummer and waste of time.

There are no in-class exams, only field projects and take-home essays. Anderson hates students using laptops in class, so don't bother bringing yours... unless you're a ninja.

The professor is great, but the biggest downfall of the class is the workload. You have to write a journal every week, a summary for a TA every week, 3 course projects, an essay, a research project and your discussion & attendance are only 10%. Most of your work is graded by the TA, so if you have a good TA (I don't) then you'll maybe do better. The lecture is very interesting and the professor provides very relevant information.

The reading load is a two volume course reader, two books and plenty of online articles.

Be aware, this class requires more effort and work than a writing intensive class.

I am not one who usually rates my teachers unless I have a particularly bad experience with one. But this isnt the case with Professor Anderson. While I have to admit the workload was a bit stressful, taking her class really changed my outlook on gender relations in our society. Each essay and reading assignment was truly a learning experience. It isnt an 'easy' A, but if you get into the material, it is fairly easy to get a good grade, and the assignments really let you express your opinions. If you are looking for a ood sociology class, TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor Anderson really opens your eyes to help you embrace all people in our society.
