Best Eng Comp 3 class ever. IT WAS LIT. Make friends, have fun discussions, learn about society. It's not even like an English class, it's just a fun discussion.

I'm the naysayer here. First, I admit that Professor Tara Prescott is a very kind person , and the course materials are kind to students. However, I doubt if her class is a good writing course. This course talks a lot on readings like Harry Potter. These discussions are "interesting", but have little to do with improving writing skills. I learnt most of writing during office hours. And the pace of the class is weird. Even though she does not talk lots about writing, the first essay dues on week two. There is only a "shitty first draft" two days before that, and she does not look at that. This means that you have no editing advice if you don't go to office hour. Essay 2 and 3 have peer review sessions, however you can't trust your peers too much. Professor Prescott focuses on grammar and languages rather than your thoughts in the essays. However your peers would probably not look at those detailed stuff. And mostly you have only two days to edit after peer review. It's really hard to make a perfect essay unless you are a experienced writer.

Conclusion for those who are too lazy to read: It's true that Professor Prescott is a good person, but I only recommend this class for those who are confident about their writing skills and are seeking a fun class. Not recommended for those who want to learn something substantial. Especially not recommended for international students.

She's a cool person, but I didn't get much out of this class. It's almost impossible to get an A in Prescott's class. She has a very strict technique to grading essays. I've tried again and again, but I simply cannot satisfy her wants in essay writing. If you're looking for a fun class, definitely take this class. However, be wary that your GPA might take a hit.

I had Maxwell Holland as my TA as this is a TA led class. Thought it was a fantastic introductory course for UCLA, and helped me get a requirement out of the way immediately. I remember there being a presentation at the end and weekly discussions, in which were easy to do as long as you attended and tried your best.

English Composition 3SL

She makes the class very interesting. i hate writing with a passion! However, she only made us write three essays and the topics where easy. 1) who are you and how do you identify 2) talking about service learning and how colleges should invest in it (we had done reading and community service already so it was easy) 3) writing about the UCLA common book we were given at orientation or giving tips on how to survive in a Service Learning (SL) class.

English 3SL is the best almost no reading, and it fulfills writing 1 requirement, and even better Prescott makes the class really fun!

My advice, take her at all cost! you won't regret it.

Dr Prescott is very encouraging and motivating - she is an inspiration. I love how she is someone students can relate to. This class was very useful in terms of understanding and analyzing texts as well as writing clearly and concisely. She made the class fun and entertaining, inviting students over for a movie night as well as a potluck. She cared about all her students and was always approachable. She goes out of her way to help students and wants them to do well. She even offered to help us with writing and proofreading our work after the class, in the upcoming school year(s). She is bright and cheerful and always makes you smile. Students love coming to her class because of her enthusiasm.

The books are easy to read and very interesting - the grade consists of class participation, leading class discussion, in class assignments, 3 essays.

Professor Prescott is so great! We read books like The Hunger Games and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. She seems really passionate about what she teaches, and tries to get everyone to participate in class. She also held movie screenings that correlated to the books.
I did feel like she crammed a little too much into the schedule, and would have liked to have spent more time analyzing the stories in depth. This would mean that one book would have to be taken out of the schedule, but I would not have minded.
I had three essays to write for the quarter, and various readings. The essays were from 1000-1500 words, which were manageable. The first two were due within the first four weeks, so the class gets off to a fast start. You do have to buy a course reader and quite a few books, so buy used!
Overall, I am glad I had her as my English professor, and would recommend her to anyone.
