Took class while TA strike, so did nothing for this class except final essay after week 5. Class is completely dependent on TA, and if they grade harsh/easy. Patrick Morgan was a very good TA, chill and easy.

Although I haven't received my grade yet, I feel like I can give an accurate review of this class with it still fresh in my head. In short, her lectures are honestly incredibly engaging and funny, and I found myself actually wanting to go to her lectures (something I can't say about most other UCLA classes I've taken so far). The midterm was a short answer response to a passage from one of the important figures in 16th century history, and the final contains 3 short essay questions. Although I enjoyed her class, she is definitely not an easy grader, and was surprisingly intimidating to talk to one on one.

Truly one of the best Professors I have ever had. She is so passionate about the material it makes you want to work harder. The class consists of a midterm 3-4 pages, a selfie which is 10 percent of your grade, and a final paper 10 pages or podcast 10-15 minutes. She is so incredibly helpful and will never hesitate to guide you as long as you reach out to her. Just make sure to go to office hours and ask a lot of questions whenever anything is unclear. I highly recommend this class with her she will strengthen your writing skills for future classes to come.

A tough class. It was not as easy as anticipated. Yet, it has been the most useful college class I have taken thus far. Your writing skills will improve, and you will become a better writer. She is helpful during office hours and clears things up there. Above all else, she is intense and wants students to do their best work. If you ask questions and want to do well, you will. Ultimately, she is a very good professor.

Tutino is incredibly brilliant, she understood that the pandemic was not enabling us to perform at our best so she helped out with grades. These consisted of a midterm and a final project or paper. Really dope class, she doesn't take crap from anyone and she helps her students. She would even offer to look at our thesis during lectures and give us feedback. Be prepared to take criticism. She does not like mushy writing.

This was one of my first classes at UCLA and it was by far my favorite one thus far. Tutino demands true critical thinking and tests your understanding of the content. This level of difficulty comes out in the essays, but with how the grading is structured and how she is always willing to be of help w/ email or OH, odds are you'll come out with an A if you reasonably apply yourself.

The only real downside I can see w/ this class is if you just do not have the capacity to do big-picture, hard thinking you'll feel lost. The GroupMe for this class was a cesspool of the same people freaking out over having to come up with original analysis and an argument, instead of regurgitating what the professor/textbook said into essay form like most classes do. But even though this might be a downside for some, I think for many like me it was the single best part about this class.

It's basically what everyone else is saying- she IS incredibly difficult but it's for great reason. She cares a lot about every single student's work- the words you choose, the connections you're drawing, the meaning of it all. She's very intent on cutting all fluff, even if you write prettily, she works hard to make sure it means something.

She really does exemplify the best of UCLA faculty, she knows her field incredibly well and is dedicated to her students. You have to be careful to listen to every single thing she says in lecture, and really take advantage of her OH. Do the papers ahead of time, listen to what she advises for them. She lays out what differentiates A's from B's from C's. She recognizes the complexity of the coursework but she'll put in as much time as you want if you just show up and have the questions yourself. Engaging in lecture, slightly intimidating in OH so it's best to know what you want to ask her.

Take this class if you want to really work on your writing and understand Historiography, not get some easy course credits.

This class is exceptionally boring which is a shame because the premise is interesting. I took it during fall 2020 so it was online, and lectures were not mandatory or useful. I had a good relationship with my TA which was very helpful. The class is not particularly difficult and Tutino is probably the best professor who teaches HIST 94

This class is 100% doable. No homework or quizzes, just one midterm and a final--so in other words don't blow these assignments as there isn't much of a cushion. This class is extremely necessary as it helped me learn how to write and think like a historian. Professor was kind and helpful; however, attending live lectures wasn't always necessary. Plan ahead and form a relationship with your TA so you know what they're looking for. Papers were time-consuming, so do not wait until the last minute to write. I would take this class again. If you're able to select Patrick as your TA he was amazing!!

I took this as a GE credit, however, I found the rigor and material of the course to be one of the higher difficulty GEs I have taken. Prof. Tutino does have class slides, however there is minimal writing on them, so it is super important to attend every lecture. At the beginning of the course she does mention that she does not give out extensions carelessly, however, when there is an extenuating circumstance she was very considerate and was willing to offer an extension. Not only are the lecture sections important, I found that the TA sections were even more helpful as the TAs tend to go more into depth and clarify some tricky subjects mentioned briefly in lecture. This is also a class in which the "required readings" are definitely required for success, and especially the class textbook as a preparation for lectures. While this was not a exceptionally intriguing topic for me personally, Prof. Tutino does a great job of keeping her lectures engaging and interesting. I recommend this class, but if you are looking to take an low-effort GE, I would not enroll in this class.
