Prof Crosby is a great professor and somehow managed to get us to participate in an 8am class. I also learned a lot about the world and myself in this class, which i am very thankful about.
Nevertheless, here are some important points to consider:
- attendance is required. You get one unexcused absence. After that, your grade drops a whole letter for every class missed. Two tardies count as an absence
- this class has a huge workload. The homework took me more time than chem, bio and math combined.
- you need to participate in class.
Next to that, the class is really fun and truly an easy A or even A+
The workload of this class was hell in the beginning but as you reach week 5 or 6, you will get comfortable with the pace of the class. Make sure you attend EVERY class and complete EVERY HOMEWORK on time. The class is a cakewalk unless you challenge the professor. You will genuinely feel yourself get better with your writing. The lessons are super useful. There are tons of group activities and he always appreciates new ideas and voices. Talk to him during office hours and discuss your narrative's progress. He is always friendly and gives the best advice.
Pro tip: A+ is 99-100%, A is 90+%
so don't stress if you mess up one or two homework.
Very approachable and helpful. Professor Crosby is very engaging and wants his students to do well. Most of the heavy lifting is done earlier on in the class leading up to the midterm which is a rhetorical analysis essay. Some busy work. Very fair grader, holds helpful office hours.
I liked Professor Crosby's teaching! You always knew exactly what he wanted writing wise. This is his second career, so he brings in a lot of insightful experiences that makes his lectures engaging. If you know MLA format and can write a good thesis statement, you're chillllling in this class.
Professor Crosby's class was enjoyable and relatively easy. As long as you follow his instructions on prompts exactly how he wants them, there is no reason for him not to give you an A. Also make sure you are never late to class and never miss class as that can impact your grade negatively.
Professor Crosby made this class worth every second! He cares so much about helping students improve their writing which is why he assigns a good amount of writing based assignments. UCLA needs more professors like Crosby who make class a comfortable and fun learning environment. I would 100% recommend this teacher.
Professor Shane Crosby represents the best of many worlds: he helps fulfill your English I requirement, he gives you a good grade, he doesn't give you that much work, and you ACTUALLY LEARN stuff from him. It's amazing, but this professor is literally a guaranteed A, as long as you don't do something stupid (like have 2 or more unexcused absences).
Workload is very generous. There are weekly assignments, but these are very easy, just a little time consuming. Make sure to do these, as you can only get a 70% maximum grade on that assignment if it's late! We were supposed to have two big papers for this class, but Professor Crosby mercifully lowered that to one paper only.
His lectures are highly engaging, and you learn stuff. Unlike high school English perhaps, you actually want to be there, and it's the same in the conferences. He's a very down-to-Earth type of person, who genuinely is interested in your life, how you're adjusting to college, and whatnot. Not afraid to cuss out in lecture; this just helps make him even more relatable to the students.
Seriously, as long as you follow all the guidelines that he provides to you, you will BREEZE through this class with an A. I shudder to think if there was anyone in my 22 person class that was in danger of an A- or below (Professor actually told us on the last day of lecture that he expected all of us to get As in the class).
Overall, HIGHLY recommend that you take his class. It's so worth it, you discuss about engaging topics (America currently, politics, global warming, racial and other stereotypes in society), learn lots of material, improve your writing, all the while earning an A and not even taking up that much time per week. Excellent overall.
Professor Crosby is the best! He's so funny and really makes the material interesting. Let's be honest, no one in the class really wants to be reading and writing essays while we have other classes going on. But Crosby really picks out some cool stories and makes the assignments super easy. There is a bit of reading and writing but it's totally manageable. Basically, as long as you do the work you get an A. If you need to get ur Writing I requirement done TAKE CROSBY! (also you don't have to buy anything for the class)
I mean all in all I don't think I could've had a better English Comp professor than Crosby himself. I highly recommend taking him as he's such a nice individual and is great at communicating what he expects from the class. The readings in class were eye opening and thought provoking. I very much enjoyed his class.
