Fall 2025 - I absolutely loved Professor Thein. The class was about political imprisonment and the lectures were incredibly engaging. She does not take attendance but does have days where we do in-class assignments where you turn in a physical paper, however she announces the dates of these assignments ahead of time. Despite attendance not being mandatory, I would still recommend attending, so far this has been one of my favorite classes here. Professor Thein's area of study is so interesting and she is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. The grade is made up of 4 response papers and based on lecture attendance (if attendance isn't super sparse throughout the quarter) she will drop the lowest score. The final project consisted of a podcast about any topic relating to political imprisonment which she grades herself (tas only grade response papers) but she is not a harsh grader. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit that mainly involve being in class and turning in something, so super easy to get. Overall, this class was pretty easy, but also incredibly interesting. 10/10 would recommend.
