The class itself is by no means difficult, but very work intensive. Lectures become insanely monotonous after about the third week, so luckily one can just view the slides at home and save themselves the time.
If taking before graduating, be aware however, as the 15 page paper on top of final is a bit much...Usually professors choose a knock-down drag-out paper, or a final; James does both.. Be warned.

Rather easy professor. He can be dull at times, but he's pretty straightforward. Everyone seems to think he doesn't have a concern for his students, but I think he's taught the class so many times, he's simplified it to the max so that students don't really need much help. Plus, 140B is a pretty simple concept, so there isn't much need at all. Just pay attention, read his slides, and you should be fine

I built my Winter term around the next class Prof. James is teaching. The first day of class, I was convinced I wouldn't like James, and I was dreading the term. By week three, I was hooked. The lectures are faced paced, the expectations are high, and you get in what you put out - BUT WOW - I have never been so impressed by a professor.

He's got funny mannerisms and an unusual cadence, but I find myself really looking forward to class. I walk out of every class period with new, interesting, applicable information. I feel like I'm getting a genuine education.

DO NOT take James if you are carrying a heavy term - do yourself a favor and take him in a light term when you can actually do all of the assigned readings. Don't just throw in one of his classes for extra units - you'll hate yourself.

I'm looking forward to my class next term, but I already know it's going to be a ton of work.

I studied well, and I've gotten an A on everything in the course. Grading was fair and reflected the work I put in.

Good luck!
