TAKE THIS CLASS! Professor Beckmann is the best professor I've had at UCLA! She's super engaging and really cares about her students! This class is pretty low maintenance too, and professor Beckmann gives extra credit! Honestly going to miss taking this class because of how enjoyable my experience was! Also Carly Pope was a great TA and really helpful!
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! Professor Beckmann is a top-notch instructor here at UCLA. I am so happy that I had the chance to be taught by her. I took her during COVID so she was super understanding how situations are different for each of her students. She records lectures, uploads slides, and answers every single question on the Zoom call and later uploads them on CCLE. It is clear that she is super passionate. I hope I get to take a class with her again in the future. Her class consists of check-in quizzes (completion), 2 quizzes (there are 3; take all 3 and she drops the lowest), 2 writing assignments (no more than 1200 words), and a final project. She provides extra credit too! Definitely recommend taking her; you won't regret it. My TA was Carly Pope; 10/10. Carly was friendly and did a great job having a section at 8 am.
I loved this class. Professor Beckmann was great. Very sweet and a funny personality. I’ve had great experiences with every classics course I’ve taken, so I’d definitely recommend this as a GE (or just for fun.)
I didn’t keep up with the readings, but they were interesting and helpful for studying. When it comes to grading, Professor Beckmann usually did things that worked in our favor. For example, we had three quizzes, but the lowest grade was dropped. Some people complained about the quiz timing in our mid-quarter survey, but I thought it was reasonable. I didn’t study for the first one and managed to get an A, but then when I prepared for the second one I ended up with a B. (so maybe the key is not studying lmao) We also had check-in quizzes which were graded for completion that were 15% of our grade. Very easy points. My first paper was poorly organized (I didn’t properly state my thesis) and I still got an A. Our final was also pretty flexible and gave us the opportunity to be creative and demonstrate what we had learned.
There was also an opportunity for extra credit that was worth 5% of our grade, all we had to do was attend bonus lectures for a club called “Objectively Awesome” and write about two of them. They were super interesting and didn’t have any consequences if you didn’t attend.
Overall, this class is pretty easy and, personally, I found it super interesting.
Professor Beckman is honestly so awesome! I had her when we were online because of Covid and she was extremely understanding and nice. She makes sure to answer questions in the chat and she has a forum on CCLE where you can ask questions. Her lectures are engaging and she is clearly passionate about her work which is great. Taking a previous Roman history class might help with understanding the context, but since she reviews Roman history briefly in class, it is not necessary. We had 2 papers, but she went over the guidelines for the papers and clearly outlined what was expected in the essays. They were graded fairly by the TAs. I honestly would take this class again.
Professor Beckmann was the sweetest professor I have ever had. She was so compassionate towards her students, and her lectures were very engaging. I have never been an art history person, but I truly found this class interesting. The assignments were clear and the tests were certainly manageable. Please take a class with this professor if you can!!
Professor Beckmann is an excellent professor. She was really engaging in her lectures and takes time to make sure students understand the concepts. She was very clear on what she expected us to know and would even take a couple of minutes to recap what she discussed at length in lecture. I strongly recommend anyone take this course (or any other course) with Professor Beckmann.
Professor Beckmann is far and away one of the most compassionate instructors I've taken. I had to take this course online due to the StayatHome order and she has changed her course structure multiple times to accommodate changing situations. Material is engaging and she uses slang during her lectures to keep it interesting. I think you can pull off a good grade as long as you focus on her lectures and understand the themes discussed. Participation is weighed quite heavily, even for a "North campus" class so I would highly recommend engaging in discussion and not being late.
Professor Beckmann is such a great professor. Not only are her lectures very direct (also recorded and not mandatory attendance) but it is clear she is very passionate about this topic as she is able to speak about personal experiences almost every lecture. She is genuinely very kind and gave us a very manageable workload throughout the quarter. I would highly recommend taking this class just because of the professor!
I loved Professor Beckmann!! She was so enthusiastic and her lectures were so good that I pulled up at 9 AM for every class even though everything's recorded. We had 2 midterms and a final project. I didn't keep up with the readings and did fine because Professor Beckmann's lectures are so comprehensive. Just go to class and STUDY and the midterms will be a breeze. There is a lot of memorization but the content is interesting!
All the lectures are recorded, so literally (I'm not saying I endorse this), you really don't have to go to lectures. I binge-watched all the lecture videos and did well on both the midterms, so I would only study for this class the week of the midterms (2) and one final project (super easy!). Discussions are mandatory, though, but my TA was chill and it was helpful for the tests.
