Winter 2022 - Especially with the online format, this class was pretty easy. The lectures were recorded and posted on BruinLearn, and the course grades were based on quizzes, labs, and a final assignment. None of these were particularly difficult, and they do give you some hands-on experience with using research tools. Professor Dale was friendly and a generous grader. I'd recommend this class if you're looking for a fairly fun and easy way to fulfill a COMM requirement, or if you're interested in communications/psychology research.
Winter 2019 - THE BEST ! Take as many classes with Rick as you possibly can, even if you're not interested in the subject. His lectures are engaging, and he's really passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Plus he really wants his students to succeed and understand the material. The class is extremely easy, but I still feel like I learned a lot. Also he is Canadian so 1) he is extremely polite and literally told us he's sorry he had to give us a final and 2) he has an accent when he says the word "sorry." Overall rating: **********0/10
Winter 2021 - Professor Dale is one of my favorite professors I've had at UCLA so far. Even though I wasn't extremely interested in the class when registering for it, his passion and enthusiasm when teaching the subject made my learning an enjoyable experience. I loved the way this class was set up. Students have up to two weeks to complete each weekly quiz. Out of the five or so labs that were given, you only have to complete two of them for credit. On top of that, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to what to write about in your labs, which I also really liked. No midterm or final exam. Instead, you write a final paper at the end of the quarter. Also, lectures are asynchronous. I came into the class just aiming to fulfill my degree requirements and then came out of it learning some pretty interesting stuff. Highly recommend taking this class!
Spring 2019 - This class is mislabed, it is actually called: Science of Language. This class is awesome, it consists of weekly quizzes, 2 labs, and a final project. Professor Dale is probably the only good comm professor at UCLA. He is hilarious, kind, very helpful, quick at emails, and always wanting to see his students succeed. This is my third class with him. Take him, you will not regret it.
Winter 2022 - Probably my favorite professor at UCLA. Although it's more stem based, Dale is super clear and the class is really friendly to people like me who are kind of scared of computer science stuff. I wanted to take more classes with him but it didn't work out with my schedule haha.
