I liked her! She's a standard good math professor - gives good examples to understand the concepts during class, gives good practice questions for homework and doing them all myself (even if it took like an entire day sometimes) really drove the math into my brain, which is basically how math works anyway. Her midterms aren't great because she gives you 10 extra credit points that just makes the paper unnecessarily long and that makes it harder to just get through the paper. But I think that's mostly because it takes place during the 50 minute lecture time and you can more than make up for it in the final when it's a kinda-longish paper but you have three whole hours to work on it. This class is just practice a lot and you should be okay. She's a good professor!
I think a lot of people rated her badly because they aren't able to deal with the material properly - which could be for many other reasons than the professor.

The teaching was very connected to the textbook—it was nice having two resources (the teacher and the textbook) to reinforce what I learned. The homework problems were well-chosen and the midterms were fair in difficulty. For Ms. Greenfeld, I just recommend that maybe she write bigger or in a color that is more visible. Students who sit in the middle or closer to the back would benefit greatly from this improvement. The teaching was fine and she gladly explained confusing topics—the only bad thing about the class were the students who always think that it's the teacher's fault for their own bad grades and lack of effort.

This may be the worst math professor of UCLA. I have no clue how she received her PhD let alone a math degree.
She can’t explain even the most basic concepts; she didn’t once define what an integral was during her lecture, so many of her practice problem solutions are wrong and she gives you problems that require calculators and then she forbids them on her exams. She makes so many mistakes on the chalkboard and her writing is near illegible. She literally has no idea how to teach and then she gets annoyed when people leave her class mid lecture. I walked out of one of her lectures more confused than I was coming in. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

This is Rachel's first quarter teaching at UCLA and me and my friends were lucky enough to have her. She has incredible difficulty explaining concepts to students as she doesn't have a handle on the English language very well. She is intelligent but cannot articulate her thoughts to the class. You can't even ask her questions because she legit dances around it and just says "yes" or "no" and moves on because (I'm assuming) she doesn't know what you are asking her. Many students stopped attending lecture after week 3 because she doesn't really teach what is on the homework and assigns not only many problems but the hardest problems in the book so it is very difficult to complete the homework at times. It is Nov. 20 and I have not taken the final but the first two midterms were terrible. This past midterm average was a 58... an F. She puts incredibly difficult problems on the midterm that you have never talked about which makes it difficult to study because you don't know how to prepare yourself. If you have already taken calculus in high school then you just use your knowledge from the previous year to help get you through but for those who this is their FIRST calculus class.... well they are doing terrible in the class and I feel really bad for them. My advice: find a better teacher especially if you want to really learn and understand calculus concepts well.

Just failed another midterm, yet again, by yours truly *cough* Rachel Greenfeld *cough* a math professor who can’t teach math. Wait what? A math professor who can’t teach math? Yea that’s right... Professor Rachel you’re ruining my life, please do all your students a favor and stop teaching:) thanks xoxo

I know deep down that Professor Greenfeld is very knowledgeable in regards to calculus, but she fails miserably when attempting to convey her topics to class. Most of the time, she confuses herself while teaching, causing 75% of students to stop coming to lecture around week three. Her inability to teach reflects easily in her averages of her tests, which are 58% and 64% respectively. The material on her tests are nothing that we have covered in class or homework. Homework is far more difficult than it should be, which makes it incredibly hard to study. The professor is a really sweet person, but has serious trouble explaining topics, in lecture and office hours. I would not recommend her to anyone who actually wants to learn. Hopefully, UCLA requires their professors to be taught how to teach before giving them a class in the near future.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT. This has to be by far the absolute WORST professor at UCLA, never would I have imagined coming here and seeing a professor confuse them self on a topic they were trying to lecture us on. It is crazy how oblivious she is to her TERRIBLE teaching skills, she once asked the class if we understood what she was teaching for that day and the whole class responded with no's. Greenfeld seemed overwhelmed and honestly I hope she contemplated quitting teaching at that very moment. We have had substitutes for her class who do a MUCH better job at teaching than she does. The ONLY way to pass this class is either coming in with an in depth knowledge on single variable calculus, teaching yourself literally all of the curriculum or going to tutoring provided by one of those professional frats at least weekly.

Do not take this class with Greenfeld. She is unclear about the concepts herself and a bad teacher

Although she seems like she would be a nice person, she is not a great professor. Lectures are not as helpful, the TA does a way better job of explaining the material.
practice midterms are nothing like the actual midterm. Class Average was a 68% for our first midterm. The homework is A LOT. Trust me there are way better professors out there. I am not trying to bash on her but honestly do not take Math 31 with her. It is not worth it.

I took this class having taken calculus during junior year in high school, but I didn't touch algebra or calculus at all in between. Overall, I didn't dislike Professor Greenfeld as much as other people, but I wouldn't take a class with her again. The averages for both midterms were pretty abysmal, so there was clearly something wrong with how concepts were being taught. Often, during lectures, I needed to repeat what had just been said to make sure I understood it myself since it wasn't always clear. Professor Greenfeld seemed like she knew the concepts, but it was difficult for her to articulate her knowledge to the class. There were also questions on the midterms which didn't reflect what was in the homework and lectures. While I don't recommend taking 31A with Greenfeld, if she ends up as your professor, just know that you'll probably have to do practice problems and/or read the textbook to give yourself a better grasp of the concepts.
