This class was probably the easiest GE I've taken so far. Usually 1-2 readings per week that are due on the day of your discussion section. Slides are not posted and there is a participation assignment at the end of your discussion and also the lecture, so you have to show up for points. The class was somewhat interesting, but it is so easy and I did not care much about the topics, so it was also somewhat boring. Overall, I would recommend it, especially as a stem student that needed a GPA boost.
This class made me want to become an education major. Taking this class with Dr. Barry uncovered a passion in education and social justice that I didn't know I even had. It's so rare to find a class that has a reasonable workload, low stress while still being engaging and genuinely interesting. Though I found some of the readings difficult to understand, I really appreciate Dr. Barry taking class time to cover the main ideas of the readings in depth. I also loved hearing her commentary on the topics we discussed because she has the perfect combination of humor, sarcasm, and social analysis. She took our mid-quarter feedback and made changes like giving us breaks and more small group discussions which I really appreciated. Really really easy GE that you'll find genuinely interesting!
My TA was Fernando who is sunshine in human form, literally the best TA.
Good GE, with pretty short weekly reflection assignments, and a final project. I took it when they were doing online lectures, but I believe they're moving to in-person now. My TA Subeen was super chill and nice. Discussions were pretty relaxed, with individual or group assignments each week. I wasn't a huge fan of Professor Barry - she seemed super full of herself/vibe was off with her. Honestly didn't learn much at all, but it was a chill GE!
Dr. Barry was super understanding, created a welcoming environment for students, and overall fostered a fun classroom to learn about the diverse educational issues at hand. Assignments were very simple and encouraged us to reflect on our understanding of the readings + our personal experiences. Would recommend her course!
YES YES YES, please take this class. If you are looking for a GE requirement, this class is for you. Professor Barry was an amazing professor who listened to her students and made sure the class was not too much work or too difficult for her students. There were no tests and the final was basically a 2 page blog about a topic we discussed during class. The assignments were 2 paragraph assignments, one for the weekly readings (which were very short), one during class, and one during discussion section. Overall, outside of class, I spent about 1 hour a week on the class. It is super light and super interesting as well. I learned a lot through the discussion based nature of the class, and overall the entire teaching staff is super friendly. Oh, did I forget to mention that all the grades are based on completion (but you have to make your writing associated with the topic at hand). Yea, overall this class is awesome and anyone looking to fill up a GE, this class is for you.
