Dr. Mehdizadeh is an excellent professor! Going into this class, I thought that english was an inherently subjective subject and there was no way to actually get better at writing. Dr. Mehdizadeh completely changed that whole narrative. The difference between this class and other classes in the past is that Dr. Mehdizadeh explains why we write the way that we do. This class is a lot more engaging, and it is clear that the most important thing for Dr. Mehdizadeh is that her students are learning. After every segment of class, she gives an abundance of time for questions. If you are able to be engaged and take advantage of this, you will thrive in this class, and learn a ton about writing. For me, this was the most helpful writing course that I have ever taken, because I utilized the time she gave for asking questions. Also, this class is generally so wholesome because the whole premise of the class is about combatting mental health issues and academic overwhelm. That being said... It's a little bit ironic because this class had the highest workload of any class I took winter quarter. The workload is pretty extreme, but it leaves you extremely prepared to be successful on the final project. Overall, I highly recommend taking this class with Dr. Mehdizadeh. As long as you are proactive in your learning and allow yourself to pay attention in class and ask questions, you will learn a lot!
Dr. Mehdizadeh was very helpful when it comes to improving our writing skills. She was available for office hours and paid attention to each student to make sure that enough guidance was provided for the assignment. There were discussion posts due twice a week on the readings that require extensive reading and writing. Participation is graded on discussion during lecture, so attendance is a must. Our quarter's theme was belonging and we read 3 different novels/memoir along with some journal articles. There was a final project that included a final paper and a creative component. I enjoyed taking this class since the class size is very small and you get to know everyone. Would definitely recommend for a writing II class!
I loved Dr. Mehdizadeh's class! She is very passionate about our learning topics and manages to engage even the shyest students. I loved the writing assignments in this class; they made you think about the state of the world and challenged you to see past your preconceived notions. She also grades on improvement throughout the course, not perfection, so don't worry if you aren't the most passionate about writing. You should do well in this class as long as you consistently show that you are working on improving. 10/10 would recommend it!
Dr. Mehdizadeh is super kind and you can tell she very much enjoys her job. She seems very passionate about helping her students do well but doesn't let anyone off easily. There's definitely a lot of writing and reading in this class but then again, it's an English composition class, so. If you take this class do not be afraid to talk to Dr. Mehdizadeh and ask for help/advice on your assignments bc it seriously helps in the long run
Why everyone is gushing about this class is beyond me. Even though I liked prof. Mehdizadeh, I didn't think the subject matter to be particularly intriguing or engrossing. I didn't really see a change in my writing, unlike what most reviews claim, nor was it a life-changing experience. You must actively participate in the class because it is quite work-intensive. She also tends to score harshly initially before letting up once you turn in your final entries, which I presume is done to encourage you to put out real effort rather than settle for doing the bare minimum. Overall, she was a great teacher and I recommend taking the class if you are willing to put in the work on the papers.
Overall, I think this is a great class to take with Dr. Mehdizadeh. The topics are interesting and the grading is fair; as long as you genuinely try to learn and show progress you should be able to get an A. There is quite a lot of work though, as you have to write weekly posts which end up being like 2 pages a week. Since the topics are pretty hard you have to spend a while trying to understand them and writing something good. You do get a ton of help from the professor however, just go to office hours with your questions.
I took Dr. Mehdizadeh's class in 2015 Fall and received an easy A. I agree her class are challenging, but her topics are interesting. I have one friend that took another Engcomp 3 class and all he did was writing essays about the history of LA. For Dr. Mehdizadeh's class you can write anything that's related to the concept of multi-culture and diversity. This is essentially helpful if you come from a diverse family or culture background. Honestly I don't think the class is that hard, I am an international student and English is not even my native language, yet I manage to get an A. So if you actually work and read, you will be fine. Would recommend this class, professional professor, interesting topic and good class environment.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! LISTEN TO ME PLEASE. In the summer during my Orientation I picked this class because there was very limited english comp 3 classes and i made a terrible mistake. I did summer school also and i had a 4.0 GPA. I am extremely studious and social and Dr. Mehdizadeh seemed to have really liked me and i liked the class. The class was cool but it is extremely hard and stressful for no reason. If you already enrolled look at the syllabus she will send it really late and trust me ALL the work on there, you will do. This was the class that made me stay up late all nights as i had HW due everyday but the weekends and Tuesday. This quarter i took Math< enthomusicology Jazz and this class with a fiat lux and i received A's in all classes and a C in this one. I never missed an assignment i took all my essays to the writing center etc. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Forget what everyone else says trust me. The class is fun but its fun with consequences. Hope i was able to help.
Dr. Mehdizadeh is a very cool professor i really liked her as a person, but in class, my fellow classmates and I didn't really like it. Dont get me wrong her class is probably the best english class i have been in throughout my life just being a freshman in college, but the workload is RIDICULOUS. It is not the traditional 3 essays then you are done. Her class is set up with a lot of readings that require annotations to show that you actually did it and each reading you have to give a summary etc. This class was a little stressful, but it was the only class i didn't fall asleep in all quarter. All her essays revolve around you and your input, which i loved about the class. We had 5 blogs due every friday, and the final project is worth 40% of the grade. The class is definitely doable but you gotta work for it. I did everything like EVERYTHING last second (even the final that was do yesterday) and still managed to scrape A's here and there. So take the class if it seems interesting but know that it is alot of work. She is a great proffessor!
Dr. Mehdizadeh is the first professor that I had at UCLA and I thoroughly loved her class. It was challenging but thought provoking and it could honestly be fun. We all became very comfortable with each other and shared our honest opinions about the texts we read. It was a discussion based class with Dr. Mehdizadeh guiding us through the texts. Professor Mehdizadeh gives great feedback on her essays and is very helpful in office hours. I would recommend Dr. Mehdizadeh for English Comp 3. Her class has been one of my favorites while I have been at UCLA.
