large class, long hot lectures. she is a very well spoken women and seems to enjoy what she does. however, there are a lot of bulletpoint slides and long dry explanations/breakdowns. your grade/success/enjoyment will be completely reliant upon your TA. mine was helpful and funny - i actually didn't mind going to discussion.

Good professor. She's an excellent lecturer compared to another history professor I've had. She is very engaging in class (to the utmost extent that pure lecturing can achieve). She lectures the whole time with a powerpoint that consists of slides with pictures just to jolt people's interest. A laptop is necessary to get all the info she mentions in class.

EXAMS:
Consist of short answer IDs and essay questions. She does not give out a study guide, but don't panic. For the short answer, just study the people, places, events, etc. that she puts up on the powerpoint (that should cover most of the possibilities, you get to choose which IDs to answer). For the essay portion, her topic is always manageable. She is very good at selecting a question that encompasses the main idea of the portion of history you're learning about. Thus, even if you haven't the slightest idea about details, her question is general and comprehending enough that you can always jot something down.

PAPER:
One paper, 5 pages. Pretty easy if you're not picky. She gives you the prompt, no choice. When I had her, we had to write about the Black Death.

Overall, she is very concerned about student learning. She wants to make sure everyone is on the same page. She makes us feel open to ask her questions. The most impressive thing I found was that if someone missed lecture, and I guess whoever it is would email her, she would send out a class email asking for anyone who would be kind enough to email her the lecture notes, which she then emailed to the person who missed lecture.

McClendon isn't a bad professor. She's an interesting lecturer, although her powerpoints are basically useless. You will have to go to lectures and take thorough notes to get a good grade.

This wasn't the easiest history class, especially since she doesn't give out study guides and the breadth of general knowledge you're required to have is huge. Note the distinction between breadth and depth - there's a ton of material that spans nine or ten centuries, you just need to know the basics about everything. Her tests have two parts, a short answer ID section where you pick from a list of terms and write a paragraph about each one, and just a straight-up essay (two on the final). Grading depends largely on your TA. It's not a free A by any means but if you put effort into it you'll survive.

Don't take this class if you want to get an easy A for your GE requirement. You have to know so much. And she can get boring sometimes. But if you like European History, then I guess go for it. (from Carolingian empire to the reformation?)

What a sweet, funny, and sensible professor.

Professor M. was what made lectures enjoyable and easy to listen to. She has a good sense of humor and likes to interact with her students. Her lectures were very straightforward and so comprehensive that often times, I just ignored my textbook and studied my notes for the exams.

I did not regret taking this course or her, and if I had to, I'd do it again.

Really nice lady with an awesome sense humor. I took this class pass/fail, so I didn't try very hard, never read, never went to class, + any slacker trait.

Anyway, the class was really chill and lax. She is a very charismatic lecturer, but sometimes she can get really deep into the history. What I mean is some of her lectures delve into some really insignificant events which she touches briefly. BUT, these minor events will be on your exams, so you will require computer-like memory to ace them.

Personally, I was lost throughout the whole class and on the final, I couldn't answer a single question. But I got a Pass. She's freaking awesome.

Prof. McClendon is a very good lecturer. Classes were not boring at all: what you got out of them were what you put into them. The readings were not too bad, lectures were fun, just 1 paper... You guys need to lighten up.

This class was pretty easy. There's only one essay and you have three opportunities to turn one in. Her lectures were not that great, you kind of felt like you were in a high school history class where you would actually get more insight of the events from the textbook.
The professor herself is not very hard, she's more outgoing and likes the big lecture hall to participate (gets kind of annoying sometimes). Your grade depends on the TA so you don't have to even go to the lectures. RECOMMENDED? yeah I guess, but there's better history classes out there.

these ratings you see above are probably useless, because it is the TA who decides your very subjective grade (read: sucking up probably helps). i had a great TA, but i don't think mcclendon dove too deep into the really important ideas of western civ in her lectures. as a bio major taking this class for a GE, i think the class is easy provided you have a good TA, can write decently, and do most of the readings.

Great Class. If you read her syllabus and compare it to the other 1B classes offered by other prof's, her's is the least intimidating by far! And she's so sweet. I had an issue, and she was very approachable and accommodating. My TA was great, as she was not a stickler for dates. Good class. Good GE... and I DO NOT like history!
