Dr. Tingley is a great professor. This was his first quarter teaching at UCLA, and he approached the transition to online learning with ease. He cares about his students and will do the most to make sure that his students are able to succeed. His lectures can be repetitive, but he includes great examples that really help to understand the concepts he teaches. The homework can be lengthy, but it covers all of the concepts taught in lecture and prepares you well for the tests. If you go to labs and use the TA's as a resource in lab, then the coding will be no problem on the homework or exams. You do not need to have taken the LS 30 series to do well in this class as long as you go to lab and learn how to do the coding . His exams are a little difficult because he asks you to explain concepts and show an understanding of statistics as opposed to memorizing and applying formulas. But, if you pay attention in lecture he will explain everything you need to know. He also offers plenty of extra credit (up to 3%) because he wants you to do well in this class. Dr. Tingley is a great professor, and I would recommend this class to anyone who needs to take statistics.
Dr. Tingley is a great professor. He dealt well with the transition to online learning and regularly expressed his concern for the wellbeing and learning of the students throughout the quarter. He showed us specific ways the thinking and skills we learn in the course can be applied to real issues we are currently experiencing in the world. He is funny, engaging, and loves to talk about birds.
This course is much more useful than anything you would learn in a classic statistics course (i.e. Stats 13 or 10) and I have already been applying the skills I have learned in the course to my research. The homework can be difficult, but it is graded fairly and is reasonable to do if you complete the associated lab and check out the lab solutions.
All in all, I highly recommend LS 40, especially if you can take it with Tingley.
There are some fundamental concepts that are difficult to grasp which (in my opinion) is what makes this class hard. Prof Tingley is very patient when it comes to making sure this is clear. I wasn't doing well in the class because of this as well as the change to online formatting as well as the social climate in our nation during this time. Prof. Tingley was very understanding and was making accommodations even before the LS Core came out with guidelines for how to handle finals during this time. I think that was an important show of character and something huge to take into consideration when choosing a professor, and Tingley passes the test with flying colors.
Professor Tingley's course, Bayesian Modeling for Ecology, was by far the most useful class I have ever taken. He is an incredibly engaging lecturer, and every lecture was exciting and I looked forward to it. This course was manageable yet demanding for all levels of statistics knowledge. The midterm was very fair, and he offered the opportunity to fix mistakes made on the exam. The final project was a very fun opportunity to apply cutting-edge statistical methods to your own research (regardless of whether or not your research was in the field of ecology), though he offered to give you data to analyze if you do not have data of your own. The problem sets were the only part of the class that was difficult. Though difficult, they were very manageable if you give yourself ample time, attend office hours, and ask questions. The labs were very fun, and necessary if you want to do well on the problem sets. The grading was very fair. I have never had more fun with a course before, and this has by far been the most useful class I have ever taken. If you do research in the life sciences, it is imperative that you take this course with Professor Tingley.
His question answering skills were lacking, and he straight up gave false information about the tests. Not a huge fan cuz the class seemed easy but then the tests were not what he told us.
This class was much easier than LS30a and LS30b. The content was pretty light, the homework was very reasonable and discussion sections were very helpful for understanding the concepts. Lectures were also pretty engaging.
I can confidently say, Dr. Tingley is the best professor I have ever had throughout my UCLA career. If presented with Stats 13 or LS40, TAKE LS40. I BEG YOU. You'll deffo thank me later.
No weekly readings because everything you need to know will be presented in lectures. Just a weekly quiz.
Besides, you'll learn this class so frickin well that EE BIOL C172 (an upper div class) is literally the exact same as this class. So if you do well here, deffo consider taking the c172 advanced stats (even tho it says advanced, dont let it fool you because it's the same thing as ls40 hehe so dont tell anyone I said this).
If research is something you'll be doing in life, ls40 with tingley is SO highly recommended you have no idea.
ok enough tingley praise for now lols until we meet again!!!!!
