Fall 2020 - Professor Abdou is a great professor. Professor Abdou cares about his students and did a great job trying to make the class more comprehensive given the online format. Just do the homework without help and you will do great. He always said "You may feel like I assign too much homework", but homework never took more than 5 hours per week. It consisted of about 7 problems some more difficult than the others. If you read the book and go over the example problems in the book then the homework will be easy. Overall I spent about 5-7 hours per week doing work outside of class. He does not give many example problems in the class, so be prepared to attend the discussion sections. The TAs ( Sun and Eylul) are also great and discussion is where you learn how to solve problems. The tests are timed, you get 2 hours for the midterm and 3 for the final. Don't bother asking for a 24hr test. Time was not an issue for the midterm. Although I barley finished the final. Overall the class will go well if you put in work, or it will be hard if you don't put in work.
Not a good teacher at all. As other say on top, he just reads his notes and rewrites some stuff on the board. I saw no point of attending class. However, he does care for his students that he knows who comes to class or not. He always talks in condescending tone and his answer doesn't even help for student to understand the stuff. Don't expect to learn anything in his class. However, one good news is that he lets his TA write his exam. If you get a good TA, the exam will be piece of cake.
He's a tough professor, no doubt about it. But his classes are extremely engaging because he will call on anyone on the spot. Sometimes he can go a bit fast, but you will learn. Just go to class, stay awake and you'll learn. His tests are usually like 3 or so questions. They are typically fair, basic you just have to KNOW the equation. Definitely a MUST prof at UCLA.
Abdou is a decent professor. At first he made the class seem really difficult and I didn't like him very much. He made a discussion section that wasnt on URSA and he was disappointed if you had a time conflict. I couldnt make it and I know this affected my grade. He missed several classes because he is always traveling. By the end of the class I realized that he just cares about how much you learn and he wanted us to be interested in nuclear engineering. I really didn't have to work that hard to get an A-. Overall I would say take this class and this professor for a good elective.
