Professor Nasiali is an amazing lecturer and a wonderful person. She always comes to the class with a positive energy which is infectious. Her lecturing style is extremely engaging, and the classes are always so informative and multi-dimensional. The readings she assigns are very interesting and well connected. This class will definitely increase your analytical skills.
If you go to her office hours to go over your assignments, your writing will improve SO MUCH! I cannot stress this enough. Her feedback is extremely helpful and constructive; I owe a lot to her. She is really encouraging, understanding, and the nicest person ever.
She is one of the best professors at UCLA, so do yourselves a favor and take one her classes.
Hands down, one of the best professors at UCLA.
Professor Nasiali is one of the best lecturers here. Take a course with her and you will genuinely develop an interest in history. Her slides were always well prepared. She promotes class discussions even in lectures as big as 200 people, and often takes a keen interest in her students, by making the effort to remember their names. She is also very receptive to creativity and conflicting opinions, and never imposes that her way is the only way. I would highly highly recommend this professor, even if you hate history (like me :P).
I'm not the biggest fan of history, and I had a really bad enrollment time so I was mad that this was one of the last options available to take for a GE. However, this class didn't turn out to be that bad. The professor was really kind and her lectures were interesting, but I do admit that sometimes I was too tired to pay attention (that was on me though). There weren't any tests for the course which was great, the midterm and final were essays (I do not recommend procrastinating on these). I think mainly the grading comes down to your TAs. Overall, I didn't mind the class; it wasn't the easiest but it wasn't difficult either, it's manageable if you're not overloading yourself with extremely hard classes.
This class was amazing! I felt professor nassali was such an interesting lecturer and I walked out of class feeling like I had learned so much everytime. Class was really based in on a midterm essay and a final essay where you are analyzing primary sources. There’s also a final project which can be a podcast or blogpost on a contemporary issue you’re passionate about. Then participation grade. I loved this class so much and definitely suggest it!
Excellent professor! She is a very engaging lecturer and made the subject interesting for me to learn about. It was easy to follow along during lecture since she connected everything to a broader theme. It is important that you talk with your TA about expectations for the essay's since each one wants something a little different. Overall, I would recommend this class if you like French history.
I took this class because it was the only GE that fit into my schedule where the prof didn't have terrible reviews. Going into it I was not too interested in the material, but I will say Dr. Nasiali made the lectures very engaging and entertaining. I am not a huge history nerd, but I enjoyed how passionate Nasiali was about the subject and how she also made an effort to connect with her students and learn their names. The class is really only based on a midterm essay, a final project, and participation. The final project is pretty fun because you have the option to do a podcast episode on a historical object, which I actually quite enjoyed. Your grade in this class, like many GEs, is based more so on the TA than the prof. So, while Nasiali was a great professor, my TA was a harsher grader in my opinion and so I did find myself struggling a bit in the quarter after receiving my first essay grade. However, we were allowed to do essay revisions which really helped. Overall I would say this is a pretty good class to take if you are looking to fulfill a GE requirement or are just interested in history!
class was easy, professor was not the best. She was a hard grader and not very clear when It came to assignments. if you put in the work you will do fine
class was easy, wasn't a huge fan of prof Nasiali and her lectures, but you don't need to go to lecture to succeed in the class. Spencer was the best TA, definitely recommend his section. grade was based on participation, a paper, and a final project (either an op-ed or a podcast). straightforward to succeed, but the class covers so much I didn't feel like I learned much
Overall I really liked this class. The material is easy to understand and Dr. Nasiali presents it in a creative manner. While the lectures sometimes felt like they dragged on and on and on, Nasiali is for the most part an engaging speaker and has well-prepared and understandable slides. She is very kind and easy to talk to, and tries to learn as many names as possible in lecture. Some TA's were harsher graders than others. Your grade is made up of a midterm paper (40%), a final op-ed paper or podcast (30%), an annotated bibliography for the final (10%), and participation in discussions (20%). Weekly homework usually just consists of primary source and textbook readings, and you can find a PDF for the textbook online.
