All Ratings and Reviews for Miguel Garcia-garibay
He's pure evil. He made the class mean a C/C- but told us at the beginning that it would be a B-/C+ so everyone's grade turned out to be a lot lower.
Very nice man, wanted everybody to learn
tough class, u have to do a lot of studying and a lot of memorizing. that said, he does try to help u out with extra credit points, but the class would probably be better off without the straight scale, because the class would not be so intimidating otherwise.
Garibay was my first o-chem teacher and he made the basics so confusing. Although he seems like a nice guy and had lots of office hours, his exams were pretty challenging. You need to spend a lot of time studying.
Miguel-Garcia-Garibay is a horrible teacher. He himself is too confused to teach students. He often teaches wrong, more importantly, sometimes unknowingly. I mean, he lacks in basics. He should not be allowed to teach any graduate courses. You cannot expect to learn right things from him, try to avoid his courses. He usually does not reply to stutents emails, that's bad. His lecture is also unorganized and confusing most of the times. Don't ask him any good question, he won't be able to give you the right answer.
I'm surprised when I read someone said that he lacks the basic knowledge, because I found him to be very knowledgeable in terms of basic and advanced concepts, as one would expect from any ucla professors. I do realize that, while he does a good job explaining lecture materials and chemistry concepts, he does tend to explain them in a way that undergraduates who have little or no organic chemistry knowledge will be confused. On the other hand, those at the graduate level can benefit from his explanation. Unlike the previous reviewers, I feel that he does a better job teaching GRADUATE courses. He does have to work on organization though.
he is not a chem teacher. this is the first time i feel like i am taking a history class rather than a science class. science courses should be more like understanding and thinking classes. however, u don't need to think in this class, all u need to do is to MEMORIZE. to tell the truth, i don't know what i learnt in this class. all i know is that there are a bunch of reagents giving a bunch of products. he writes TONNES of reagents and products on the board and only gives a couple few mechanisms. i have to try to write out ALL the mecahnisms myself at home in order to understand what is going on. i think that understanding is the most important part in learning, he only makes u confused and doesn't help u to understand. so if u wanna learn chemistry, don't take his class.
i cried cuz i studied so hard for this class but because i cant memorize a dictionary of reagents and reactions and i got killed...sniff sniff... you either get an A or a D...sucks if you're not superman
Prof. Garcia is a great O-chem professor.
You don't have to sit there memorizing mechanisms all day.
Extra Credit on exams which are doable.
Straight scale 90 A 87 A-
Each 15 min quiz is like a mini comprehensive final thus requiring lots of studying.
He allows each TA to make their own handout for discussion and I wish he made 1 handout so you wouldn't have to do 30 problem sets + Book ques. for an exam.
He has a slight accent but it is unoticeable.
Take him if you have the chance.
