Tl;dr Take this professor if you can. He's an overall great teacher, gives engaging[ish] lectures and makes things as straightforward as possible. The exams were reasonable and relatively forgiving for small arithmetic mistakes (and we were allowed a notecard). Although I should mention that (at least when I took it) there were always 3 multiple choice questions that were weighted way to heavily. The class is definitely not an easy class that you can fall asleep in but Gutperle does his best to hold review sessions before midterms and make things fair. Personally I didn't love his teaching style (and it definitely got worse as the class went on) as he sort of just rambled through the topics (though at least he posted his notes), but I learn better from textbooks anyway so I didn't mind it too much.
Professor Gutperle is a great lecturer with a sense of humor. I really enjoyed his lectures. He gives weekly homework. Homework questions are fair. Tests are a little bit hard but reasonable. I didn't do well on my final, which cost me an A. Overall, it was a great class. Would recommend taking 1B with him!
Although physics isn't exactly my favorite subject, Gutperle's daily demonstrations kept me engaged (I doubt I'll ever witness another person blast Billie Eilish on a flaming stovetop again in my life). However, I don't think his derivation heavy style of teaching was very effective, at least for myself. As someone coming in with no prior experience, most of the derivations and assumptions left me either confused or incoherent. Gutperle's midterms and online final were pretty tough, especially the second midterm. Homework was relatively straightforward, albeit on Mastering Physics (possibly the worst online textbook experience I've had). Overall, I'd say that taking 1B with Gutperle was enjoyable just from the demonstrations alone.
I very much agree that the lecture notes are a big mess, but Dr. Gutperle is very open and caring. The lecture is long but quite fun and I feel that the homework is overwhelmingly harder than expected. In my opinion challenging questions on the homework is not needed because they need a lot of time and will not be on the tests at all. Overall, Dr. Gutperle is great and I recommend him to everyone.
Michael is an amazing Physics professor with a whimsical sense of humor. There are many professors who are extremely knowledgeable, but what sets Michael apart is that he is able to break down complicated concepts and explain them in simple terms. His lectures are just so engaging with his funny jokes and interesting experiments. He even dressed up for Halloween and bought us snacks for Thanksgiving! Homework assignments aren't time-consuming (8 questions per week) and quite fun to work on, while exams are fair too as long as you put in effort into revision. Also, kudos to Casey, our brilliant TA who's able to explain all the abstract E-field concepts in intuitive ways. I would highly recommend taking Physics 1B with Michael!
Prof Gutperle is the absolute BEST. Super funny and engaging lectures with lots of cool demos. The tests were also reasonable in length and difficulty, and he gives practice exams that are similar in difficulty to the actual exams. Super organized, posts lecture notes beforehand. TA Casey is also amazing, they went out of their way to host review sessions for each exam and was super responsive with emails. Could not recommend Prof Gutperle and TA Casey more!
Gutperle is mostly clear with his lectures and has a decent amount of demos. His exams and midterms are fair, and he only tests on material taught in class. I did have to use the textbook to understand some concepts at times, since his lectures are less structured, but his in-class concept tests helps solidify conceptual (non-math) physics concepts taught in lecture.
Homework is 8 problems from Mastering a week, and he omits sections from the textbook that he does not cover in class.
Very helpful during office hours as well! Great guy, great professor, great class.
Michael is hands down the best and most fun professor for 1B. This class is hard. That's never going to change, but he does such an amazing job making this as enjoyable and worth it as possible. He always gave us 5-10 extra minutes in the exam, is SUPER forgiving with grading and overall such an enthusiastic and fun professor. The class is hard but definitely try to take it with him if you can:) WE love Michael<3
Professor Gutperle is a brilliant man but I think he just needs to get used to teaching. His lectures are a bit unorganized so topics kinda just blend together, but you can tell from his demonstrations that he is really trying hard. The TA's definitely help a lot- Dave Brown and Gabe Plunk (?) are the two really good TAs- they help summarize the important information and organize your thoughts. Homework isn't so bad because you are given the answers so you can make sure you figure out how to do the problems and understand the concepts. What I didn't like about the class was the reading quizzes and integration of the lab with the course. The quizzes were just kind of annoying but not too difficult (10 pts each), and the labs covered information not learned in class yet- which did little in reinforcing the concepts. No outside work for the labs though- you can finish during lab. If you took AP physics and did fairly well, you'll do fine in this course (and skip lecture a couple times even)- you might even want to try the honors course- I heard the professor was great. Finally, the professor's tests are fair- just watch out for the concept questions. I found that the quick quizzes in the book help you study for that as well as the online quizzes. Other than that, just do the homework problems along with some of the "blue" hard problems in the text. Just to give you a little about my background, I took AP physics my senior year of high school, and took this class as a sophomore. I got As on both midterms and thought the final wasn't bad. Hope this helps!
Gutperle is a good teacher. As a Physicist, he gets a little too advanced to explain certain basic topics in office hours, but he does explain concepts well enough to understand. The book he uses is also very good so if you do the reading and understand his examples in class you will learn Physics well.
What is best about Gutperle is that he is very friendly and truly wants to see you learn the concepts. He will keep going over problems in office hours until you fully understand them. He also seems to have a lot of office hours so it is easy to find time to attend them.
His tests are fair. No surprises and not too hard. It may seem your score is really low at first, but with the curve it will be high. Just study the examples and homework problems and you will be fine.
His online quizes are tricky. Not so much the difficulty of them as much as they are not clear and often focus on minor details that one might over look in the reading. Homeworks are straight forward, except I felt he took off a lot of small poitns for BS things. A few points here and there for stupid insignificant things. None the less, it is not hard to get A's on the homework. The lab is also pretty easy. Just show up and do the work and you will get a perfect score.
Overall I would highly recommend Gutperle. I was expecting Physics to be really hard, but it wasnt that bad. Gutperle is a fair professor and with a little bit of work you can get an A.
