Really enjoyed taking Corey's class. Do go visit her during office hours as she is very helpful and excited to teach, helping guide on the papers.

Quarter: Spring 2018
Grade: A
July 4, 2018

Midterm and final take home essays, consisting of 8 pages each. Overall, this class is fairly easy, although it may vary depending on the strictness of your TA. Corey is funny and charming in her own sort of way, but personally I found her lectures didn't give me much useful information. Lectures felt a bit disorganized, and she would repeat the same information often. Most of the learning comes from the readings, so it's really no big deal to skip on lectures from time to time. Not the most interesting class ever, but absolutely doable, and by no means terrible.

I took a corey class over the summer and I'd say it was one of the best classes i've taken at UCLA; and I've been here for a while. Corey has a fresh sense of humor and does go into very interesting tangents. If you want to get to know her and learn more about current day issues go to office hours.

Office hours for her isn't a time when you come to whine about how to write a thesis statement. Rather, you come to office hours to discuss topics you find interesting in general. This can range from the readings to anything in life in general.

If Corey seems stressed at times it's only because she's had to deal with silly questions from kids who wear wife beaters everyday and regularaly announce that they've worked on film sets before (as though anyone cares, cmon guy, you know who you are.)

Ironic as it may sound, if you care more about the knowledge of history than your grade, you will probably receive an A.

Corey is awesome. Yes, she might be rude at times, but which professor at UCLA isn't. She is an entertaining lecturer and loves what she teaches. Her midterm and final are completely straightforward. Highly recommend if you are a History major or need a G.E. or just feel like learning about U.S. History.

First and foremost...she IS RACIST...she was dropping the N-word in lecture like no other History professor I have had. In office hours (I am White mind you) I did notice she played favoritism to Whites and did not give 100% to all other students. Plain and simple she is racist...the charges levied against her about being racist do have merit.

She is really good at telling stories, keeping you awake in lecture, and really engaging. She is a tough grader if you have her look at your papers...I got a A-...so I am happy.

I have to compliment her in that she is a great storyteller in her lectures. However, I felt that she would lavish her lectures with details that were completely unnecessary (Jane Addams and how she would spend her Sundays, TR's intense personality--and I mean she would repeat details of his personality over and over and over again). It at times got to the point where I would think, what is the relevance of all this?
I got an A- in the class which is not too shabby for not reading much of the textbook but if you really want to feel like you learned more about 20th Century U.S History, read the textbook, I hate to say but I did not feel like I got a lot of substance from lectures.
Be prepared when it comes to the midterm--2 2 pg papers and 1 3-5 pg paper--we read Wizard of Oz and Breadgivers which are easy reads, but if you do not read them then you will not do well on the papers. The final was frustrating only because they were more lecture based AND was emailed to us only a week before it was due (whereas the midterm she gave us 3 weeks).
I would suggest to go to every lecture even if her style is not your cup of tea, bring a laptop (resist going on facebook) and take notes! the stuff she does give worth taking notes helps toward the midterm and final.

Any allegation that Corey is racist is not true. I regularly go to her office hours, and there are students of ALL genders and ethnicities - including men of color - who are treated equally with respect. I'm not even full white myself and she has always helped me out tremendously. So I don't know why anyone could call her a racist.

I have taken numerous classes with Professor Corey and each quarter its the same deal. 8 Page midterm/finals. Sounds easy enough, and if your one of the lucky ones, it will be. But the truth is that the grading is very inconsistent. It all comes down to the bitterness of your TA. Corey is somewhat of a racist and she is never there for you at her office hours, unless your white. She'll slam the door in your face while she passes out A's to everyone else. She is known for generalizing, and won't give you 2 minutes of her time to get to know you, but instead, she'll stereotype you and sweep you under the rug.

Keep a low profile, and try to change your name to something less ethnic, then you'll be fine.
