Definitely a very interesting class! Made up of midterm, essay, and final. Essays are graded fairly, however you need to study heavily for exams to understand the different components of each legal case. Exam questions can be tricky, because he will ask about the nitty-gritty details of each one. You should know their circumstances, the ruling, and reasonings for why they ruled that way. This is a great class if you're pre-law!
This class was one of my favorite classes I've taken at UCLA! Huppin is an excellent lecturer and much of the class is devoted to debate and discussion about interesting and current topics.
- The course is entirely legal-focused and about the interpretation of the First Amendment to modern social and legal issues. Huppin explains the guidelines for this kind of legal analysis succinctly and in a way that is easy to understand for someone with little to no legal experience.
- The class is a mix of application/critical thinking + memorization. The material is not difficult to memorize if you go to each lecture and do all of the readings.
- There is a midterm, a w10 final, and a short paper. The readings are organized by topic and all fairly short.
Overall, I'd say that this is a class that requires advanced thinking and focus, but the subject matter and class environment is interesting and engaging, so that makes it easier to thoroughly engage with the class material. I highly recommend!
