Fall 2024 - Not the greatest GE to take. There are a lot of things you have to cover, with three essays (the second one overwrites the first tho) and you have to memorize 30 artifacts (5 of which will be tested on the midterm) and another 30 artifacts (10 tested on the final), 7 terms (5 on the final) and 5 essay prompts (3 on the final). Take the following with a grain of salt, but I don't think they look at the final essays, as we got our grades back within 6 hours, and I know I didn't write anything of substance.

I took Chinese Art with him in the Fall. He's unfortunately boring and pauses a lot when he speaks. The readings for this class were a bit excessive, but it was overall doable for me. Technically, you COULD miss lecture, but just to secure the A, it's great to write down everything he says. I was able to get an A in this class (make sure to consult with the TAs about the essays, by the way), but I would not recommend it. I had to memorize 50+ paintings (including the artist name, time period, and title), which is just not worth all the time. Overall: interesting subject, boring professor, possible to get an A with standard effort.

I took this class fall quarter of my freshman year and I almost never went to lecture, just discussion. I got a B+ with minimal effort. Maybe it was because I took AP Art History in high school or that my TA was awesome (Julia). Anyway, when I did go to lecture I almost always fell asleep or didn't pay attention- soooo boring and I'm an Art History major. If you want this for an interesting GE or requirement for your major you have to bank on getting a good TA or else it will be a really boring class.

Spring 2025 - Initially took the class after the low rating and high grade distribution didn't seem to match up. I will say that Neolithic Chinese art is not good for a casual enjoyer of Art History: the content we looked at was really ancient, and likely not very exciting for someone who isn't into this specific niche. However, Von Faulkenhausen is clearly an expert when it comes to ancient Chinese art, and it was a joy being able to take a class taught by someone who is so passionate about the subject. Yes, he is soft spoken and sometimes lectures felt quite long, but the workload was practically non-existent, other than 1 midterm and a 5 page final. Professor Faulkenhausen made himself available for feedback and clearly cares about student learning and success. I would 100% take a course with him again.
