This is a really great class—especially if you have the time to fully engage with it. It’s a unique experience getting to spend an entire quarter reading science fiction literature, but if you don’t enjoy writing, it may not be the best fit. Aside from weekly 300 word discussion posts, there are only three assignments: Paper #1 (4-6 pgs), Paper #2 (8-12) pgs, and Paper #3 (4-6 pgs). The workload is manageable overall, but the longer paper can coincide with midterms in other classes, which makes time management important. That said, the class is very rewarding. It’s a great opportunity to write about something more creative and less conventional than in many other courses. While it does require effort to get the grade you want, it’s definitely worth it if the subject interests you. Thanks Dr. Gaffney!
I was in the Revolutionary Fantasies class, and it was a super interesting course to take while not being too heavy! All the readings were engaging, and I was glad I could read them. Since the materials were so fun, it was an easy class to take. The professor is amazing and truly makes you feel like she cares about what you think. I would take all of her courses if I could. If you have the opportunity to take her class, I would highly recommend it.
Dr. Gaffney is a gem! This was the first time this class has even been offered and she takes an amazing approach to teaching science fiction through a labor studies lens. Canvas discussion questions about the readings every week that are discussed in-class, with a paper, midterm, and final that she is willing to offer a ton of help if needed.
