Grade: A+

This was the first class I ever took at UCLA, and Professor Small is a professor who is very passionate about her work which shows through her lectures. Workload was easy, topic was an interesting intersection between psych and public policy, TA Chapman was one of my favorite TAs yet - she was incredibly understanding and our discussion section was productive. Overall, would recommend for PA and non-PA students.

I LOVED this class! Professor Small is probably my favorite professor I've had so far at UCLA. She is a super engaging lecturer and she has a lot of experience and really cares about what she's teaching. I learned a lot of stuff in this class that I can apply to real life and it even made me interested in becoming a social worker. It's a great mix of sociology, psychology, and political theory. There are 3 homework assignments throughout the quarter, each of which is a short one-page (double-spaced) reflection on that weeks readings. You can do it for any 3 weeks you choose. The midterm and final are both 4-6 page essays that you have a good few weeks to write and the topics are really interesting and fun to write about. I would recommend anyone to take this class!!!! Super easy and interesting

Dr. Small is amazing. Everyone who needs the diversity requirement should take this class. Super engaging lectures, lots of opportunities for participation, and tons of guest lecturers, which are a) super interesting but b) not necessary at all. There's one Dr. Small lecture and one guest lecture per week, so its a light load. Discussion attendance is mandatory, but that's all you need to do. The midterm and final aren't too hard, especially if you go to the lectures that Dr. Small runs. She's also super sweet and funny, and approachable if you're confused about anything. Highly recommend!!!

Dr. Small is an excellent professor. She is funny and encourages participation during lectures which really allows us to grasp the content. She is also very enthusiastic and passionate about her subject. I feel that is a class that everyone should take because it forces you to think about how everything depends on our environment. She is a great professor but like many other courses, your grade is basically completely dependent on your TA and there is no rubric provided for assignments (only basic instructions). If you fail to understand a concept or instructions, it's important to ask your TA for help before it affects your performance on your midterm or final since they determine how things are graded. It's crucial you communicate with your TAs to know what is expected of you since there's no rubrics. (don't quote me as this might change in the future) Overall, this was a great class and I would absolutely take it again. The workload consists of three reflections on class readings that can be completed during any three weeks of the quarter, a midterm, and a final exam, all of which make up 90% of the grade. The rest is based on discussion attendance and participation.
