I loved Professor Varvarezos! Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked 131B a lot more than 131A, cause I feel like even though the concepts become more abstract you actually prove a lot more of them completely so if you follow along, things click into place.
Really good glass. The homework was very manageable and had a lenient late policy. The exams were reasonable. The lectures were also recorded, but I usually went to them in-person since they were very engaging helpful. Would highly recommend taking Varvarezos if you can
This class pleasantly surprised me because Prof. Varvarezos was not previously reviewed on BruinWalk. He, however, was a very normal lecturer and he described concepts in a clear manner. We were allowed a notes page on all tests and both midterms were very easy; he does not try to fool you on exams. Some people complained that the final was more difficult than the midterms but I did not think it was too bad. If you do bad in this class it's kinda just on you.
It's...okay. As a class, pretty easy: homeworks were not especially time-consuming or difficult, and the exams were all very straightforward. That being said, it doesn't feel like we learned much at all? Most of the course felt like essentially different ways to dress-up a partial derivative, maybe plus a cross product if you're feeling spicy. If you handed an above-average 32A student our formula sheet and gave them our final, they would honestly probably pass. No other major downsides, the lectures were okay (lots of examples, some neat drawings), but I do feel somewhat let down by this course as an elective. This class only talks about curves and 2-manifolds, so do keep that in mind.
Konstantinos is an overall amazing professor!
I didn't attend about 4 lectures due to travel, but since the class is BruinCast it's very easy to keep up with the material.
His homework is VERY reasonable- only 6-10 problems per week and is really good practice for tests.
His midterms are also very fair- I found both midterms easy, and they were direct applications of the content learned in class.
The final was relatively difficult compared to the midterms but not unreasonable (just required a deeper level of thinking/understanding).
Konstantinos is a very kind person and always pauses his lecture for people's questions. He is always willing to help students out, so definitely go to office hours if you need help!
Totally recommend this class to prospective students!
Professor Varvarezos is an excellent lecturer with reasonable homework and exams. However, I did not enjoy attempting the discussion worksheets. If they were shorter and more manageable to complete with a group during section, I would have enjoyed this course much more.
Good course - the professor explains concepts very clearly in lecture (though he does adhere pretty closely to the textbook), and he does a good job answering questions during class and office hours. The workload is not especially high: one homework (approx. 8 textbook questions of average difficulty, graded on correctness) and a discussion worksheet (graded on completion) every week.
The exams were all relatively simple - pretty much all of the questions were just straightforward calculations using things from lecture. Notecards were permitted for the midterms, and a single cheat sheet for the final.
Konstantinos Varvarezos is by far the best professor I have ever had. He's incredibly kind, patient, and intelligent. He answers all questions asked in lecture clearly and simply. I only got a C cause I was sick on the day of the final and did horribly. The class itself is super hard and if you don't have to take it you shouldn't, but if you do, Varvarezos is the prof you want.
Konstatinos is a gem of a man. although he may be a little timid (it was his first time teaching), he clearly cares about his students. He gave so many examples I almost got bored, he grades super fairly on the exams (which are pretty easy and not as complex as some of his examples), and will always answer any question you have.
If you have a choice, please take him, he is so nice and sweet and I def would not have survived this class if I had a different professor.
