Fall 2024 - TA: Maddie Paulow (the GOAT in my opinion) I'm quite surprised to see that there hasn't been a single new review since 2012 from here! Okay here is my review! The grade breakdown is as follows: Practice using the online lessons: 15% Listening/Reading/Writing/Performance Assessment:40% Speaking Assessment: 30% Quizzes: 15% Basically, you will be tested on your Spanish capabilities at least twice in the quarter (they essentially act as your midterm and final). You gotta go to class because that is where you will be able to practice your Spanish with your peers. Maddie was the best because she would create her own material that went beyond the textbook and make the activities very fun. As someone who was scared to death speaking Spanish in the class, it truthfully wasn't that bad. I do think the material pick up a bit after week 4, but it was definitely manageable, and Maddie made everything feel very doable. If she's teaching the whole series, I cannot recommend her enough! She cares so much about student's learning about Spanish, and she is more than willing to explain to you the certain quirks about the language! The writing exam part of the exam were always easier for me, but the oral is harder in the sense that you have to act out scenarios with a group of 2-3 of your peers. The quizzes mainly consisted of the stuff you learned for the unit you were being taught, and the online practice was essentially free points! Maddie is the goat for real!

Spring 2025 - Your experience in this class will depend entirely on your TA. My TA was Estefania. She always told us that our class had the highest attendance compared to the other Spanish 3 classes and it's not hard to see why. Estefania's energy and enthusiasm for teaching made this classroom such a welcoming environment. She made me feel like she genuinely cared about my learning and the success of each one of her students. I also found her feedback on the assignments helpful in improving and she prepared us well for future assessments. I would highly recommend Estefania! Each week you will have about 2-4 hours of homework on the VHL site. Some of the VHL assignments were too long and tedious but on the whole, they did a good job of teaching basic grammar skills and content. If your knowledge of Spanish 1 and 2 is rocky, you might want to review grammar and vocab skills before starting this course. This class dives straight into Spanish 3.

Winter 2023 - Class was facilitated by Anita Joo Kyeong Kim and was pretty straightforward. Directions were always clear and Anita made herself extremely available for questions. I think the course load was very manageable and the classes themselves are fun. I wish the course covered more material, but the pacing itself was good and I still managed to learn a lot.
