The class is time intensive, with many assignments that take a lot of time out of lecture. However, if you put in the time, you will learn so many useful life skills and useful information through this class. Would recommend.
This class is just not as bad as some people have made it seem. The only thing that was annoying for me was that she doesn't record lectures so you do have to go to class. My major has nothing to do with this field but I found it really interesting, and the assignments are relevant to improving your financial literacy. You do have to study a lot of material for the exams but it's doable and I could have gotten a better grade if I had put more time into it, so an A is definitely possible for everybody you just have to be willing to put effort in (which is easier to do if you think you will find this content interesting). Getting the textbook was virtually useless so you don't really have to buy it, I used it once to look up the directions for an assignment but you could probably get a classmate to send you the information.
Gardner is a really amazing and super engaging lecturer. She is somehow able to make the boringness of accounting interesting. Her assignments are extremely tedious but aren't intellectually challenging or particularly difficult. Exams were quite difficult and it was hard to tell what to expect, but if you just study out of the course reader you'll be fine. I'm taking 1B with Woo right now, and I think the fundamentals taught by Gardner are extremely beneficial. If you just put in minimal effort for this class, you'll be great and probably really successful in future accounting classes.
I like how she teaches; she is intelligent, but her assignments are terrible. For our assignments, we were forced to write more everything on paper for some reason. I wrote more than 3000 words BY HAND, which took me 5 hours, whereas that could've been done in 20 minutes with MS word. I admit I'm not the best at writing, but still, I just don't see how writing by hand makes sense. Some of the questions in the homework were also biased and didn't really have to do with class material.
do not take this class if you don't need to... seriously you are better off waiting another quarter to get woo. genuinely one of the worst lecturers I have ever listened to and is a professor that clearly gives no craps about her students. better off not going to lecture at all and studying from her recorded lectures. she harps on how to be a millionaire rather than properly explaining the principles of accounting. she also sends out her stupid study guide that is so vague and basically tells you to memorize her entire course reader two days before the exams. her assignments take forever to do (i've spent maybe over 120 hours on them) and she only puts one in at the end of the day that is based on peer evaluation. DO NOT take this class, this class is genuinely too much work for what its worth.
I am a sophomore, and I have taken about 13 courses now - some in Math and some in Astronomy. I have worked with many professors, good and bad. But this professor is literally the worst I could ever get. The class starts with an over-enthusiastic start, and you feel that there are good things to come. But that is not the case, the start is just compensation for the terrible learning experience you will have. Management 1A does not have complex content - but it does have a difficult professor. Gardner is so bad that, me who has done many Accounting internships in the past, somehow gets confused. She teaches things in a way to make her subject sound more complex than it is and she talks like she is trying to be a theatre girl. It is so annoying sitting in her lecture and constantly losing the point she tries to make and figuring out the definitions of the twenty key terms she wants to use every single sentence. There is so no need for management to be explained like a complex quantum physics topic, but somehow, I believe I could do much better at quantum physics than management with this professor.
I am taking this class with some friends, and a lot of them are dropping the major because of how Garnder teaches this class. Her assignments and workload, and exams are a completely different story. They are overly long, unnecessarily created and are just making the learning experience worse for everyone. Also, she is high-strung in her ways, does not take criticism and asks you to print everything on paper and will deduct credit if not done. If you are trying to take Management 1A, then take it with Woo (the other professor) and it will be much less taxing on your mind.
Honestly, when I was in this class I was bitter that I got an A- but now that I don't have Gardner anymore I realize how I miss having her as professor. She is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had, the way in which she teaches is incredibly clear, and her lecture notes are very very helpful.
The professor is extremely condescending, just as a previous comment mentioned. My score is well above the A boundary (some 10-ish points out of 100) but got a B for the final. As I have already left the country for a gap quarter, I asked the professor if she can do a virtual paper review but she said no because it is arranged in person. I understand that I probably did worse in the final and it is not common to misgrade the papers, but it is ridiculous to refuse a request of viewing my paper by Zoom or other means. This class literally dragged my GPA from 3.92 to 3.86 and made me make up my mind to quit econ major and learn something I really like, as I have decided that accountant is the last job in the world I would do after this class. I truly recommend anyone who just select econ/bizecon major randomly/because of your parents to find what you really like. Good luck! :)
I took this class half online and half in person. The online portion was really boring, but Gardner was very fun to interact with in class. When she's not actively going over the notes on the big screen, she is down at the bottom of the lecture hall walking between rows of students and talking to us to get us engaged. She answered almost every question students had as long as they were tangentially related to the subject, and was very clear in what she expected us to be able to do; she would tell us on week 3, for example, that a specific chart we were going over would be on the midterm in that specific format, and it was. The tests are not easy, per se, but they are fair. Gardner tells us exactly what will be on them about a week in advance, and her notes offer plenty of examples that you can redo to get practice. The textbook is not required for this class, but I found a version for $8 and purchased it. It is very helpful as she "assigns" many practice problems that aren't due but help you to get a feel for what the midterm/final will look like. I saw some comments saying that only 5 people finished the tests, but that's not true. She does curve substantially if she feels its necessary, but honestly I think a lot of people just don't do the practice assignments. The projects were annoying, especially the 14-page Berkshire Hathaway assignment, and the two group projects were somewhat time-consuming, but the deadlines are reasonable. Her notes are very clear and straightforward, and she always posts a pre-recorded version of her lectures in case you want to review something or couldn't make it to class. Note about the final: it's not cumulative, and I reiterate: she literally tells you what to study. Overall, I would rate Gardner very highly. I am taking her right now for 1B, and hope to be able to take more of her classes in the future.
This was a great class. I was scared to take it based on some of the Bruin walk reviews but I ended up absolutely loving it. The professor is kind and we ended up spending a portion of lecture time just talking, answering questions, or submitting assignments. The notes are printable and to the point--very easy to follow. A lot of people agreed that the tests were hard but she sent out an email telling exactly what was on each exam. She also gives a solid curve on each exam. There are a lot of projects assigned (some of which are pretty time consuming) so it definitely requires some solid time management but overall I would recommend.
