Hi guys ! I'm going to do an IN-DEPTH Review of this class. If this is too much for you to read, then just stop reading and take this class. If you don't, well... your loss tbh.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROFESSOR:
I don't typically do a direct review of the professor, but I must say Jukka is EASILY the MOST REALEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER MET. He is super nice, and not only in the personality way that most people say which honestly doesn't mean very much to me. I mean he is nice in the way that we all really want them to be, in terms of grades. I know you don't know me, but I promise you that you will definitely NOT REGRET taking this course
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LECTURES:
Lectures are a MUST because there are clickers every lecture which is about 10-11% of your grade. In the start you will be able to grasp the ideas because of your previous AP Calculus experiences, but once we walk past that area, you will be VERY lost quite often. He covers only the theoretical ideas in class and doesn't go over any problems. Usually he reviews the previous lectures for the first half of class, and then goes into new content the second half of class.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TAs:
TAs are fairly important as they do grade your homework which is a good percent of your grade (15-16%). They are also supposed to help with your coding section( Yes there is coding involved). My TA wasn't super helpful but she graded nicely so I suppose that was something.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAB SECTIONS:
Lab sections are technically mandatory, since they don't take attendance as far as I'm aware. People simply go to get help for their coding assignments as they are relatively difficult after week 3 or 4. The entire thing is simply coding for about 2 hours, and the prompts are somewhat difficult to understand. It can be difficult to answer the questions if you don't understand them. Also to keep in mind TAs DO NOT grade the lab section. They are graded by outside graders who you don't know. I would show up. It is necessary in order to do well. it is 12% of your grade + 3% is the lab quiz (Which was fairly easy).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOMEWORK:
This ! Homework is probably the single most important thing in this class, and also probably the most difficult thing. Since the professor doesn't go over the homework, it can be somewhat difficult to solve them, especially as you go further into the quarter. You are however, allowed to drop the 2 lowest homework grades so that is a bonus. I would save them for the last two weeks as homework gets significantly harder near the end.

Also Homework problems are very similar to the problems that appear on the exams so it is good practice, or at least, it will look familiar during review sessions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOOK:
The book was provided as a PDF for our class, so don't waste your money. All the homework comes out of this book too.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MIDTERM/FINAL:
- Yes there is one midterm and one final
- They are a fattt majority of your grade (60% I believe)
- It is VERY LIKELY you will get an A on both of them if you even remotely try to
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STUDY GUIDE/ REVIEW SESSIONS:
This is the single MOST IMPORTANT THING in this class by far. If you don't go to these review sessions, you are simply screwing yourself. The professor practically goes over the exams during the review sessions and give you an exact idea of what to focus on for the exams.

Literally if you aren't sold, his class median for midterms was a 94 and for the final was a 97.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OVERALL:
Would definitely take this class again if I had to (which I don't) but you should definitely take it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone ! I'm back with my IN-DEPTH Review of this class. I will break down all aspects of this class, so even if it may seem like a LOT of words, I would definitely recommend reading it since this will be the only review you will need to read. If you still aren't going to read this then just read the TL;DR:

TL;DR: TAKE THIS CLASS WITH JUKKA. THE END.

Okay Lets Begin!

PROFESSOR:
Jukka is, and I can't emphasize this enough, the REALEST professor/teacher/instructor I have ever had. You know those professor that people meme about being amazing/nice or whatever. Well this is it guys ! You have found probably the best professor on campus. If you have taken Jukka for 30 A, you probably aren't reading this because you are already going to take his class for 30 B. Although he can be a bit passive aggressive at times, I honestly feel like it has to do with the vast difference in mathematical intellect between prof and students, since some of these concepts can be difficult to grasp to us, but is basic math to him. However, He does care for his students' success and wellbeing in the class and makes it very clear what he expects us to know for exams.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LECTURES:
Lectures are mandatory since there are clicker points to be earned in each lecture. The clickers are NOT graded on accuracy which is very nice, but they do add up to a good amount of the total class grade (at least 10%) so try not to miss lectures as much as possible. At the end of the quarter, he usually drops 3 of the lowest clicker scores so don't stress if you miss a couple of lectures for whatever reason. Other than that, the lectures are basically 20-30 minutes of review of the previous lecture, and whatever time remains after he lectures on new content, which he will review on the next lecture. The lecture is purely concepts with little to no problem solving, which is probably the ONLY flaw in this class, since homework problems can be a bit challenging to tackle by yourself since there is very little guidance in that matter.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TAs:
TAs are fairly Important since they grade your homework which can amount to a good chunk of your grade as well (atleast 10%, upto 16%). They also help you with the lab, which is arguably the most difficult aspect of the class since it is coding, so if you have background in Sage/Python, this bit will be super easy for you. Shout to my TA Yoon Jeong who helped us a lot more than the other TAs my friends had. Also, TAs DONT GRADE LABS !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAB SECTIONS:
Labs aren't exactly mandatory, since they don't take attendance, but if you don't go you are most screwing yourself. People show up because most of us in LS are not good at coding, otherwise we would be CS Majors. During lab you can get help with the coding from TAs and LAs who have answer keys so they can tell you if you are doing it right or wrong, and how to do it. Highly recommended that you do attend, although again, it's not mandatory. LABS are GRADED ON ACCURACY, unless otherwise mentioned by the prof. Labs are also graded by random people that you will most likely never meet in life, and sometimes they take forever to grade them so you won't know your lab grades until near the end of the quarter. Not a big deal though. I don't believe they grade too harsh, but you do have to be at least close to correct. If you are stressing, don't. Prof dropped the lowest lab score so you'll be good. Lab does make up a good bit of the grade (at least 10%)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOMEWORK:
Homework can be a bit challenging as their is little guidance on how to go about it as Professor usually just goes of the concept, and TAs focus mostly on Lab assignment. Aside from going to office hours, you are mostly on your own. They are definitely doable, especially early in the quarter, but get significantly more difficult past week 5-6. Homework is also GRADED ON ACCURACY, and make up about (10%-16%) of your grade. But you can drop the lowest two homework grades, so its not too bad really. If you have a chill TA, you should be fine.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOOK:
The book is required but it is PROVIDED in PDF by the prof. All Homework usually comes from the book, so you will need to use it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MIDTERM/FINAL:
Now we are getting to the good stuff!
- Yes there is ONE Midterm
- Yes there is ONE Final
- Yes there are study guides for both, as well as review sessions for both
- They combine for about 60% of your grade I believe, but that is actually only good for you
- You will most likely get As on both if you are willing to try even the slightest bit
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STUDY GUIDE/REVIEW SESSIONS:
These are the single most important aspect of this class. I don't care how fucking smart you are, if you don't use the study guide and attend the review sessions, you are only screwing yourself. the Prof practically goes over a slightly changed version of the ACTUAL EXAMS during the review sessions and tells you how to solve each problem. It's very difficult to do bad on the exams if you attend the review sessions and pay attention. 2 hours for a basically guaranteed A is honestly an amazing deal you won't get anywhere else at UCLA.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OVERALL:
If I had to take this class again (which I clearly fucking don't) I would definitely without a doubt take it with Jukka again. If I had to take ONE class for all 4 years, and the grade I would get would define my GPA, I would take this class in a heartbeat, eyes closed, face down, ass up. I don't care.

If you want an easy class with an easy workload, this class is not for you.

That being said, if you want an amazing professor who challenges you and takes so much time out of his day to ensure that you are learning and understand the material at a deep level, this is the class for you! (Definitely the type of class that Engineering majors should be taking to prepare for future coursework!)

Though some may argue that Jukka does not "support" his students because of the extensive material and heavier courseload, I would argue that the aspect of "support" comes from the fact that the extensive homework (which is due at the end of each week, making it manageable if you start early) actually allows you to get in lots of practice (so you really understand the subject at a deep level) AND the support also comes from the fact that he will literally take so much time out of his week to not only give extensive office hours to those struggling, but to craft study guides for midterms and finals that really prepare you for the exams if you take the time to do it.

I could get an F or an A in this class, and it would not change the fact that I truly believe that Jukka is one of the few professors that actually care about your learning journey and your future. He reignited my passion for learning.

Highlights of this class:
* Jukka is approachable and he always welcomes you to ask questions in class.
* Jukka is the type of person to check in with you and tell you to not worry when you're stressed. (He actually cares about you as a person!)
* Jukka prepares his students by telling you the type of problems that can come up on the test by listing possibilities on an extensive study guide. (I kid you not: He literally gives you an organized study guide of what can come up on each of the final/midterm questions. He WILL NEVER give you a question that doesn't match the material you learned in class lectures, homework, or the study guides.)
* He gave us an extra credit opportunity to make up our midterm grades.

~this is a corona time review~

TAKE JUKKA. HES THE BEST PROFESSOR FOR LS30A. YOU DONT NEED TO WASTE MORE TIME FILTERING THROUGH REVIEWS FOR HIM JUST TAKE HIS CLASS.

Overall:
-Jukka is a funny guy, a great lecturer, and helps you to understand all the material perfectly! LS30A has some hard content, but Jukka makes everything so much easier to understand and genuinely wants every student to succeed. He is my favorite professor at UCLA and is truly the best professor I will probably ever have.

Labs:
-There is a coding lab once a week in which you are put into breakout rooms and work on the assignment which is due by your next lab. The labs start out pretty easy and the TAs and LAs are really helpful if you have any questions! I had never coded before but they teach you the basics and everything is fine.

Textbook:
-You need a textbook for the homework/ studying, but it is free and linked by the professor in CCLE at the start of the quarter.

Exams/Quizzes:
-There is 1 midterm and 1 final in this course. Both are pretty rigorous but definitely manageable! The midterm is pretty much all the conceptual math you learn and the final is combining that knowledge with the calculus-based math you learn later. The midterm was definitely easier than the final but each of the exams are split into 3 parts: study guide with your groupmates 60pts, individual final 80pts, group final 60pts. It is a very forgiving system where even if you do poorly on the individual portion, you can redeem yourself with the study guide and group portion.
-There are participation quizzes after every lecture (essentially clicker questions) where the answers can be found in the lecture slides and you have unlimited attempts to gain full credit! You have a week to complete these from the day they open.
-Weekly quizzes are posted at the end of every week and stay open for about 2 and a half days. These are usually about 3-5 questions about the content from the week; for the first half of the quarter, you had 2 attempts on them (the highest of the 2 attempts would be counted), for the second half of the quarter, you still had 2 attempts to do the quiz, but the 2 scores were now averaged instead.

Final thoughts:
-TAKE JUKKA IF HES OPEN
-amazing lectures, super clear, understanding about covid circumstances
-very fair class if you study even just a little bit and go to class

Although Jukka is very nice, his lectures can be extremely confusing and often did not correlate with the other ls30b professors. Our midterms were more challenging and covered different material than the others as well.

The lab was by far the worst part of the class. They are challenging if you're not confident or comfortable with coding, and I think the TA's just expected way too much from a bunch of premeds.

10/10 would recommend, be sure to greet the penguins.
than you for coming to my tedtalk.
