I took Power with Professor Han before and also left a review on that. I really enjoyed this class and Professor Han is so cool and funny. It’s less structured than Power, so you have more freedom. however I know some people struggle with this too because then it might be harder to feel motivated, but I personally liked the structure of the class. We watched a lot of documentaries in this class that made us really emotional and cry. Professor Han is a really understanding and kind professor. Sometimes she may change the syllabus up but it’s often for the better in my opinion. I really feel that she cares about our learning and she doesn’t want us to be too stressed. Overall it was really fun and meaningful. it honestly had a pretty profound impact on me that i cant quite articulate and i think this class changed my brain chemistry. I wish I could take more classes with her but I’m graduating.
Definitely what I expected from a UCLA gender course (in a good way). Professor Han has a background in Geography and was able to include that into the themes of power quite well. I got to learn and unlearn many things about power and quite enjoyed the class.
The classes is graded as follows:
Self-introduction (100 words) = 5 points
Syllabus Quiz = 5 points
Attendance and Participation = 20 points
Online Quiz (20 questions x 3) = 30 points
Discussion Post (500-750 words x 3) = 30 points
Self-assessment (1000 words) = 10 points
The quizzes were fairly easy as long as you paid attention in lecture (there was also a group notes doc you could look at to help), with only one or two questions being curveballs. The discussion posts asked you to respond to a reading or topic by raising your own questions and doing a small amount of research. The TA's graded quite hard but that is mainly because they expected high level work. The self-assessment was a quick final "quiz" (unlimited time just in quiz format) about how you think you did in the class and what you got out of it.
Overall I would take a class with Professor Han again since it challenged me and opened my eyes to many new topics.
This professor is awful. She literally does not care for her students unless they're doing something for her. If you want to pass this class you need to be best friends with her. Cares more about her own projects than her students. She is also so unclear with what she expects from the class, and what gets you to pass. I don't recommend unless you want to do actual labor in order to pass the class.
