Honestly, this class isn't a "free A" GE from my experience. It looks like from the previous quarters that this class used to be open textbook for tests, quizzes, etc., but during this specific quarter everything was closed textbook and taken on lockdown browser. Like some of the other reviewers mention, you definitely need to work to get the grade you want. The lectures are fun and engaging, but the assessments (specifically the midterm and final) are slightly difficult. The phrasing of questions are overall strange and it's especially evident when it's true/false. Each question was worth 3 points, so if you missed 3-4 you'd lose a whole letter grade. The final project isn't that bad as it's a lot of writing and you have a lot of time -- just don't slack off. Final note: buy the course reader. I didn't buy the course reader as many people said it wasn't necessary but I ended up bombing the first lecture quiz cause there were questions from the course reader. If you don't, I still think you can end the class with an A-. Overall, an interesting GE and I'd probably take it again.

This class was very practical and interesting, especially if you go to the gym because you learn about optimal exercise, but the exams are incredibly difficult. I studied for the final by making flash cards of the textbook and lecture notes WORD for WORD but i still got a 67% on the final. The questions are too specific in the sense that it's impossible to memorize enough to do well. Nevertheless, the professor is funny and very engaging, and the content is so useful and life-changing, so if you're willing to put in the work, this class will be very enjoyable.

Honestly for a GE you should not take this class. There are much easier life science GEs that you can take and seeing as all the previous reviews were made when this class had non proctored online tests, they simply do not apply to this class anymore. The tests are very vague and ask questions that do not correspond to the course reader. Also they are proctored now with lockdown browser and your webcam is required. The lab sections were incredibly boring and I feel bad for the TAs since honestly no one is interested. Overall, the amount of time you have to spend for this class is not worth it for a GE. Save yourself and take another class.

Dr. Esdin is a good professor. His class is super interesting and not too difficult. He does take attendance but you should go to class anyways because a lot of what he covers isn't posted on the slides but he talks about. He has a big quarter-long project, a midterm, a final, lab quizzes, and lecture quizzes. Both the midterm and final were all MCQ and online.

This class is as introductory as it gets for Physiology. I would recommend taking this class if you just want to breeze through. The material is interesting and Esdin is an engaging professor. The exams are fair, with a couple of curveball questions. The big project is super simple, just relatively time consuming. Overall, definitely a GPA booster.

I really liked this class. While the class now requires location on for iclicker, the overall content and material is pretty easy to learn. My midterm was in person but the final was online. But, I heard this quarter the midterm and final are both online. 8/10 class, professsor is nice and the project is not to bad if you just follow format

Super chill professor that is really passionate about the subject. Requires iclicker, but the location isn't tracked so I would do it from my dorm. I got an A because the project and assignments are pretty easy and not too demanding, but you do need to go to lab/discussion

I really enjoyed this class! We started off learning about the importance of exercise, then moved into vitamins, followed by the cardiovascular system (he dove pretty deep into the heart muscles and tubes). One of the bigger sections focused on carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The class is definitely memorization-heavy, and having a solid base at the start of each section will help a lot. I’m not great at science classes like chemistry and biology, but this class felt different—it’s more practical and focused on diet and exercise, which I loved. That said, it might be more challenging or less interesting for someone who’s not into that.

In terms of grading, there’s a midterm and a non-cumulative final, each worth 22% of your grade. You’ll also have two online lecture quizzes, three lab quizzes, and an overall project worth 22%. Attendance in both lecture and lab is mandatory. The final was online for us, which was nice.

If you stay on top of your studying throughout the quarter, an A is totally doable! One tip: even though I didn’t want to buy the professor’s book, I ended up needing it because he includes things in the exams that aren’t covered in lecture.
