Jon was a great lecturer. (He ended every lecture with: "I'm pulling for you" : ) ) He revamped the course to simplify the labs and submission process. For example, we didn't have to use a BeagleBoard for the labs. Instead, we did all the labs in a Linux VM (Arch) in Virtual Box. He also streamlined the submission process for labs. Instead of tarballing the assignment and uploading it to CCLE, all we had to do to submit was (git) push our changes to the class server. We also got 4 late days (spread out across all the labs). The submission time is when you push, not the time of the commit.

He also streamed his lectures using Twitch (significantly better video quality than Zoom) and posted the recordings on YouTube. We also used Discord for asking questions and talking to the TAs and professor.

We also got to choose what topics were covered for the last few lectures (sockets, VMs) which was great.

Here's a link to the course website: https://laforge.cs.ucla.edu/cs111/ and the syllabus: https://laforge.cs.ucla.edu/cs111/media/cs111/syllabus.pdf . The grade breakdown is: 5% for the warm-up lab, 10% for each of the four labs, 24% for the midterm, and 30% for the final. (There was also 1% extra credit if you complete the course evaluation.)

Jon is a great teacher for CS 111. He truly cares a ton about student learning and makes sure every concept makes sense to the students before moving forward. Even the labs, which I had heard were pretty brutal in the past, were not bad at all, especially with the help of the TA section. His tests are also super fair, with minimal studying required to do good on them (as long as you've done the labs and gone to class of course). All in all, I would highly recommend taking CS 111 with Jon.

Eyolfson is a great professor who has done a tremendous job revamping this class. I didn't really enjoy OS / coding in C before this class, but after taking it with Eyolfson I feel much more comfortable with the concepts and may even try pursue it professionally. Really a great teacher. The projects were more than fair, and I especially loved how we submitted everything through git. Grading is fair and the tests were open-note, but it mattered a lot if you payed attention to the concepts bc otherwise it was hard to answer some of the more vague qs.

Jon delivers very clear and organized lectures. He is always ready to answer questions in the Slack. He is hands down the best CS lecturer I met at UCLA.

def a 9.5/10 prof.

Grading: (copied from syllabus)
This course contains 1 warm-up lab, 4 full labs, a midterm and final exam. The warm-up lab is worth 5% of your grade. Each following lab is worth 10% of your grade. The midterm is worth 24%, and the final exam is worth 30%. Finally, the class evaluation worth 1% and is done in the final week of classes. He grades according to the canadian scale so its like a 87 or smth for an A which was very nice too.
Each project was relatively fast, doable in <5 hrs each. exams were very fair too, you should be able to finish in 80% of the allotted time. He designs exams to be 'not stressful'.
Lectures are clear, streamed to both youtube and TWITCH. hes very active on slack and answers lotsa questions. Powerpoints are well done, and overall a very nice dude.

We used a (buggy) VM to do labs which could get frustrating but hes really quick to help, which was nice. def better than the beaglebones of the past. VM Might be sketchy if u have a ARM mac tho.

WOWOWOWOOWOWOW. i wish eyolfson would just teach all the CS classes at UCLA. He was SO GOOD. like usually for CS classes, I have to supplement with either textbooks or youtube videos. This man is SO CLEAR i literally could watch the lecture ONCE and understand everything because he is just THAT GOOD. honestly, he probably won't be teaching much, but if he ever teaches any class (elective, core class, etc.), i would drop everything to take it with him because he is just so understanding and honestly just such a good professor.

i didn't even do that well on my assignments (failed the first midterm), but honestly like I had not even an inch of hate or dislike towards eyolfson at the moment because 1. taught it super well 2. it was a VERY fair test off his lectures (i just made a lot of careless mistakes).

his grading scale is generous, i learned so much (cs111 is prob one of my favorite classes now just because of him), and just honestly, uGH come back jon :(
