Dr. Pang is awesome. After coming back from quarantine and getting throwing into 30AL after taking 20L virtually, the transition was made extremely comfortable thanks to the setup of this class. Dr. Pang's lectures are very clear and engaging, and are also podcasted online. The workload is very manageable and labs are structured quite well (and you can leave early if you finish—physics department has something to learn from this class). You spent most of this class in the lab (go figure) with the TA, but Dr. Pang always drops into the lab and looks around and is generally available for questions. He's also a total chad and will notice if you're doing something wrong with your sulfuric acid solution and step in and fix it without wearing gloves or goggles. He's never upset if you mess something up, and your grade won't suffer if your percent yield is low, as long as you can explain why (again, physics department, you really got to step it up). Tests are fair and not too hard as well, and this class is a great complement to CHEM 30B, which will take all your time anyway, so it's nice that this class is much easier.

The grading of this class honestly sucks because I had literally 100% on all the labs, prelabs, postlabs, presentation, and CPR yet I ended up with a B in the class lmao. The midterm was SUPER easy but I had a health emergency so I flunked it and on the final I scored okay-ish (like a 75%) because I had 3 other way more difficult finals that I needed to focus on... it just shouldn't be weighted so much for a LAB CLASS where we have so many other heavy assignments but with that said the class average tends to be an A so skill issue on my behalf for taking too many rigorous classes at once lmao

AMAZING! Dr. Pang is my favorite professor at UCLA. He is so helpful in lab and office hours and his lectures are really engaging. I can say with confidence that he truly cares about his students. I had a great experience with the class, and it was def the highlight of my week. I have never felt the joy of chemistry until I took the class with Professor Pang. I hope that he is recognized for his incredible teaching and compassion towards students academic struggles and successes.

Dr. Pang is the GOAT. With the right TA during the lab sections you'll learn so much and this class will be your favorite class of the quarter.

Exams are clear in terms of what is expected for you to know (just review the practice problem sets before and make sure you understand them)

Pre and Post-lab work will take on average 1.5-2 hours each, and with 2 lab sections a week it will take up a lot of time completing the work. But the labs themselves aren't difficult.

Ultimately Dr. Pang is an incredibly caring and helpful professor, and is an absolute GEM for the Chem department.

tbh its only week 4 so i have no business writing this but johnny pang is such a real one. his lectures are so good, he gives hints for whats on midterms, and last lab I was lowkey going through it and could not handle the fact that my sublimination not working but my man johnny fixed so fast it made me think he's been doing sublimations since birth. 10/10 if you take it with 30b this class will be the light at the end of a very dark and depressing tunnel

Professor Pang is the best lab professor!! He truly cares about how his students are doing and if you ever need help on anything during the lab he will always step in to help fix it or when you're too far gone on the (godforsaken) soil lab, he'll give you hints on what to do the next time around.

Dr. Pang was a really great instructor to have had in my first in-person lab straight from Zoom classes. Taking Chem 20L online was one of the most boring experiences and I was worried I would be completely lost in an actual lab setting coming back, but this class was well structured and the experiements themselves are not hard, they're surprisingly really fun. The lab reports are easy to get full points on if you have a fair TA (I had Kara) and the project at the end of the quarter was also pretty easy because Pang gives you lots of tips on how to start it and helps you if you get stuck or mess up. In terms of exams, we had our midterm online with 3 hours to take it. If you actually study the concepts prior to the exam, you'll probably do well and be done in about 1.5 hours but even if didn't study before and just referred to the slides, it'll take you the whole time but you can still got a good score. The final exam was fair and you'll do well as long as you UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS. I took this class alongside Chem 30B so most of the concepts on spec were easier to understand but everything else can be understood if you watch his lectures and do the problem sets he gives. If I could take this class again, I'd choose Pang because I really think he's a genuine person who gives you the things you need to succeed in the class.

Prof Pang is such a great professor. This class was completely online so naturally we couldn't do the experiments. He showed us videos of each experiment (which all looked really fun to do in person) which were made by different students in the past. They were funny in a weird way because the music varied from monotoned voice overs to an anime medley but overall the class was really straightforward.

Definitely take this class during remote learning if you don't want to think/stress out but the experiments looks pretty fun to do in person if you can take it then.

This class had a fairly easy workload. The midterm and final only accounted for about 20% of the total grade so completing the pre and post labs is the main part of this course. Some concepts are recycled from 20L and there is very little organic synthesis. Like most labs your experience depends on the TA.
