He's a very effective and nice teacher in this introductory music theory class. The class only had 5 people so we all got to know him really well. The class itself is alot of work but it has to be like that since its basically a year long class shrunk down into one quarter. He knows alot and helps and cares about student learning. During the class his grading system seemed really unfair and most people were getting bad grades but eventually he changes the grades and overall i recieved an A-. Good teacher for the class and very nice.

Hall is such a fun professor. He really cares about student learning. Everyone in the class had different strengths and weaknesses in music, and he knew them all. The quizzes and tests were fair. It's a great interactive class. He really works you though. You can't afford to slack off because your grade and career could depend on it. Still, going to class is so much fun because we got to sing and tap rhythms on the desk, and definitely learned valuable information.

I was definitely intimidated the first day of class as we cowered in our seats, listening to his lengthy schpeal on our lowly status in the music department. However, as the quarter continued, I learned that, underneath the seemingly brash exterior, there lay within a caring, supportive and fun guy who was truly receptive to my struggles with basic theory. Any initial negativity he displayed was all a careful plan to motivate us - and we needed it. Due to the very nature of the material, one cannot afford to slack off in Music 3, and Hall made sure we didn't. He was extremely supportive throughout the quarter, making special efforts to eliminate complicated concepts from our coursework. Although it's tempting to be intimidated initially, know that he is one of the most caring professors you will ever have. Make an effort to do all homework on time - it will be to your advantage. Hall is a great guy.

John Hall was a great professor and he made learning fun. It's not an easy A but if you try hard it's not a reach either. He is always concerned for all of his students and is usually around for help. I recommend taking his class if you are serious about the course. PS - don't be late to his class or else he'll get REALLY pissed...and be prepared for quizzes everyday.
