Quarter: Fall 2020
Grade: A-

I took this class as a GE. While the class was interesting, it was also a ton of work, more than I expected. Each week we had readings, lectures, and quizzes due Wednesday, then discussion posts on Thursday and Friday. Every part of the class was tied to our understanding of the weekly readings, so these were really important. The class was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed learning the basics of sociology.

I'm honestly glad I took this class because I learned so much and most of it was interesting. The readings got burdensome sometimes but the iclicker quizzes every lecture kept you on top of your readings. I would say her tests were fair and she has this rule if less than 50% of the class misses a question she takes it out, and if you got it correct you get extra points (this goes for iclicker questions and tests). I realized I actually liked going to this lecture and it never seemed like a drag to get out of bed. She gives so many examples from readings and real life that help you visualize concepts. Take it, just do it.

Quarter: Winter 2021

Pros:
- Interesting content, easy to understand
- Class is very well-organized
- Pre-recorded lecture videos, can watch on your own time
- Lecture videos are edited to be clear and easy to follow. NOT like other classes, where it's just a boring slideshow and the professor droning on about one subject for like 5 hours
- Ample opportunities for extra credit
- Professor Collett is an awesome lecturer!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cons:
- You will have to take good notes for the lectures and readings. Trust me.
- This class will keep you busy, expect to spend at least 3-4 days out of the week watching lectures, doing readings and homework, and posting on the discussion forum.
- Participation counts in discussion sections, so you have to speak up.
Professor Collet is an engaging professor and I highly recommend this class with her. There are readings and quizzes each week, so reading is necessary in order to do well on the quizzes. Her lectures cover very interesting topics and she is very knowledgeable about the subject. My TA was also extremely kind and engaging, and section discussions were well structured.
I took this as a fully asynchronous class, and the workload was extremely manageable. You learn 2-3 new topics each week through readings, lectures, and discussion forums. For most weeks, I completed all my work for the week in one day. I will say that the readings could be long and tedious at times, but they were usually pretty interesting as well. Professor Collett's lectures are also great because she always includes clear analogies and examples for the concepts that she introduces. Though the exams for this class weren't cumulative in the traditional sense, I still found them to be somewhat difficult. After the second midterm, Professor Collett showed us the grade distributions for the class and the average grade was an A. Overall I'd definitely recommend this class. Professor Collett is a great professor, the content is very interesting, and the workload is not bad at all.
this class was super difficult. not worth the stress of a GE. have hella readings each week, was the most workload wise of my quarter. the tests were super in depth about the readings, but the thing is that she doesn't go over the readings in lecture, only in discussion. The lectures themselves are interesting and I would totally listen to them in a podcast or something, but NOT when your GPA depends on it. Would not recommend, at least during COVID.
Great class, super interesting and I found Prof Collet really engaging. I took it async, so the class was super flexible with my schedule. There's one short paper (approx. 2 pages iirc), but it's not super complicated. Exams are true/false, multiple choice, and then there's a short answer section and an essay question. Not too difficult, but definitely review the main ideas of each of the readings before starting the test, that'll really help for the short answer/essay sections. The expectations for the class and each week are clearly laid out, and so as long as you pay attention and keep on top of the work you should get at least a B no problem.
Definitely more reading than I was expecting, but such a fun and interesting class. I loved the topics covered, from gender norms/practices, economics and poverty, institutions and corporations, etc. During COVID, class is all asynchronous except for discussions (I believe you can miss one and be fine). She sends out plenty of reminder emails and gives extra credit opportunities. Take this class for a fun GE.
I honestly liked this class and Collett is pretty fair. There is a lot of cushion to your grade like she drops some of your lowest quizzes and stuff. I took this class asynchronous online. I thought that she was pretty nice and she tried to make the class engaging by posting weekly recap videos and having a slack channel open for us. If you have questions, you could ask in the slack and she was pretty active on it and didn't take too long to respond, but you or other students can respond to each other as well.
The exams in my opinion were kinda hard, especially the midterm but I feel like the final was better. I got a D+ on the midterm and a B on the final and still ended with an A- since I did all the other work. The readings ARE NECESSARY to do well in the class since you have to pull examples and relate concepts to the readings in the exams. However, you can check it out for free at the powell library reserve but there's no free online version. There are multiple deadlines throughout the week so stay on track because there is a good amount of work you have to do.
