annoying and kinda disgusting—it's the exact food studies class you think you're getting. easy ge and super random mix of people but it works out. just make sure to show up to lecture and say that you're becoming vegan and you'll get an automatic A

Quarter: Spring 2023
Grade: A

This class will make you a vegetarian. You get exposed to some pretty gruesome topics (eg: animal ethics and the meat industry) without any censoring. However, the class is pretty engaging and is very discussion based. No phones or computer allowed in lecture and attendance is taken. Assignments are simple reflections and then there is a final group research paper on any topic related to Food Politics. Overall, very easy and manageable; I would take this class again.

Quarter: Spring 2023

This class might make you vegan or vegetarian. The first half of the quarter is focused on the reality of factory farming, animal oppression, and the modern food industry. The second half of the course is slightly more solution oriented, with various guest speakers from different organizations and jobs. It’s a very discussion-based class, and attendance and participation in lecture is important. The class consists of 4 short writing assignments and a final 10 page group research paper. There are also weekly reading assignments, but I think most people didn’t read them. Overall, it was a very engaging class and honestly made me think hard about and question the food industry and my personal food choices. Would recommend to anyone tbh

Quarter: Winter 2020
Grade: A

This class was really interesting and engaging; every lecture was structured as a discussion, and the articles we read/movies we watched were all really eye-opening. Workload was not too much: five short essays spaced out over the quarter, and one final ~5 page research paper. I was nervous to take this class because I thought the workload might be too much and I needed an easy GE. However, I am so glad that I took it and would definitely recommend this class! Everyone should have the opportunity to learn about all of the ethical and political issues surrounding the food that we eat! Also Aaron Montenegro is a super chill and interesting TA!!

Quarter: Winter 2020
Grade: A

This class will really make you question the food you eat. As with most humanties GEs, you'll have no problem getting an A if you're a good writer. The papers are three pages and are spaced out throughout the quarter. It was sometimes hard to do the readings before every lecture but there's usually still questions you can answer to earn your participation for that day. You basically don't have to take notes in this class. If you're engaged in the discussion, you'll have enough material to write in the papers. Overall great class, great professor.

hands down one of the best classes I've ever taken. I'm a food studies minor, so I was already super interested in the class, but I feel like this appreciate the minor and the subjects so much more. All sorts of topics were covered, from economics, ethics, gender studies, immigration and labor studies, to subconscious thinking and advocacy.

this class focuses on participation (in a good way!)
you can speak your mind and actually ask yourself where you stand on issues. Prof Tandler walked us through defenses and issues of animal consumption and instead of lecturing to us, the class was 90% speaking up and talking about our opinions. some topics can be controversial, but everyone was really respectful. he randomly called on people to participate and was super chill if you didn't know the answer to something.

the mini papers we do are SUPER chill and imo just for participation. the mini ones are 2 pages double spaced, more like reflections throughout the quarter, and the final is just a 5 paged research investigation that isn't hard either. I know I genuinely enjoyed attending lecture and listening to the insights from Prof and my amazing classmates, so I know you won't regret taking this class!
