Lectures are recorded (not required to attend), there are 3 quizzes throughout the quarter that tests if you have read them, but if you go over the powerpoints and listen to his lecture a couple of times you should be ok. I ended up not reading the readings and still did ok on the quizzes. There are also 2 essays that you have to write on a theorist and how ChatGPT analyzed the theorist wrong. All very straightforward. There are also questionnaires that are basically free points for you to get if you do them.
Just take this class, dont listen to the negative reviews complaining about him. and this is coming from someones with the most fried brain on planet earth and cant comprehend simple topics, this class was pretty damn easy.
there were like 3 quizzes, hw assignments every week but its just leaving a couple of comments on a reading doc and perusall would grade u automatically so easy A there, and then midterm and final. but attendance for lecture/section/and hw is literally half ur grade like 50% genuinely, so even if you completely flunk the quizzes/exams, you will literally at the lowest prolly get a B. all u gotta do is show up to lecture/section and u can pass easily
People are just so dramatic and annoying, like yeah he would change up the syllabus at the time, but every time it lowkey made the class better and he was doing it to benefit us. People just lose their minds for no reason its like omg chill bro. but anyways like ppl were literally not showing up to class and he could tell on iClicker, and instead of making it a big deal, he gave everyone full attendance points for the first half of the quarter without questions asked.
the last 2 quizzes ended up being online and open book so it was really chill, really easy. I did get a 48% on my midterm tho only bc im pretty slow but for the final i lowkey locked in the day before and i thought i'd fail it too but got a 90 somehow so idek. the midterm was written in class essays, the final was half mc and half essay, and quizzes are all mc.
and mind u, i never once paid attention to the lectures or properly did the readings bc i fr just dont want to, and i got an A-, so that being said, take this man's class
Plus hes pretty chill and really nice, and funny
Taking Soc 102 with Professor Guhin was a very interesting experience.
He is a naturally nice and quirky guy but his class didn't feel like the best learning environment, for three reasons.
1. Organization. His class can be very unorganized. Almost every class he started with a "bits of business" which would describe what changes have been made to the syllabus. Students were confused about the changes and how the class was going.
2. Perusall. The readings were mandatory: 90 minutes spent in the browser and 3 comments. The issue was this was that the professor wasn't entirely grading these conditions, the website itself was grading. So he couldn't/didn't really take any initiative on that grading process.
3. General clarity. I feel like he didn't always do the best job explaining the material. He spends a lot of time using analogies, talking about the writer of the text or some of the less important topics. This is especially important because of the written midterm and final being directly connected to the lecture material.
I think generally he is very knowledgeable about the subject but I just wouldn't take this class again (especially because it was an 8am). Luckily he was still accommodative in grading as participation and attendance had the highest effect on grades.
