I took his Soviet History class. A great experience overall. His lectures were interesting, and highly entertaining, too. Strongly recommened.

Like any history class, your TA grades EVERYTHING. it's hard to pre-destine who your TA will be, but I had Dan Newman as well and he has been one of the best TAs I've had thus far as a history major. He may come off as a cynic, but at least he's a realist and isn't a bitter cynic. If you can get him, go for it. Go to all your discussions because they are worth 40% of your grade. Listen to what your TA says when they tell you how to write your papers, because they are the ones grading it, not anyone else.

Don't expect crossword puzzles for mid-terms, because I don't think he's doing that anymore, at least he didn't do that for my class.

As for Professor Getty, he is probably the best history professor I've had so far. I've taken 4 history classes as a history major, and Getty isn't super easy like Ruiz but isn't super boring and hard like Urdank. Getty's lectures are very good in that it always seemed to bring a new perspective, whether it be World War I or Liberalism. Getty's lectures are all podcasted, so that's nice also.

The final exam was take-home, so it was basically like another paper. The mid-term was in class and consisted of IDs and a choice between two essays. The paper wasn't too bad, just make sure you communicate with your TA. Raise your hand and do the readings and you'll be okay for discussion. There are discussion quizzes.

It is such an easy class. All you need to have is some basic history knowledge, pay attention in class, then you dont need to study for midterm (at least). Professor Getty's way of presentatoin is amazing as well, it always wake people up by its weird noise, which is hilarious...

His lectures dumbed down history, as far as I'm concerned. His adorable down-home accent and well-prepared powerpoint presentations made lecture enjoyable. The midterm and final were very easy. Highly recommended GE.

i thought the class was interesting and very straight forward. however, if you want to get an a, you gotta bust your balls all day long... an a- is doable...

Prof. Getty is a truly amazing lecturer. He really brings the events of Russian history to life with his lectures and stories. Even though I'm not a History major, this was one of the few classes I actually wanted to go to. If you're looking for an interesting history class, then Prof. Getty is the way to go. Take him if you're lucky enough to get the chance - you won't regret it!

This is one of the best classes at UCLA. Professor Getty tells enrapturing stories that make you forget you're in the classroom. Take this course no matter what your major.

i was able to take proffesor getty for his soviet history course. despite the fact that he is a really nice person and his lectures are great, his grading is the toughest at ucla. if you want to take any of his courses only do so if you are... russian, have parents who are russian, speak russian, or really love russia; if not, don't waste your time.

HIST 22 Submitted June 24, 2004 Grade Received: N/A

This is probably the easiest history class you can take at UCLA. There is no way in the world that you should not get an A if you print out and look over his lecture notes. His lectures are real clear, he does them all on powerpoint, however his point of view on issues really comes through and he is incredibly biased. Its like listening to a person's opinion on events instead of learning about the actual history.

Professor Getty is a wonderful instructor with a real passion for Soviet History. Any question that I have asked him he answered very promptly. He is a very approachable teacher. He isn't an overly difficult. If you have any desire to learn about Soviet History, take Getty for 131C.
