Professor Xu is a perfect instructor for this class if you want to learn something from it. He has a deep understanding of this course material and provides detailed slides; however, some examples are somewhat confusing among different designs. He went over the lectures a bit fast.
Grading scheme is nice: attendance 20% (both lectures and discussions), HW's (20%), midterm (20%), and final (40%). Homework and exams are fair and related to the lecture slides. TA explains some homework questions during discussions. Not many professors offer exam review sessions, but he did for both the midterm and final. He adds questions via iClicker to create some interactions and discussions, which helps you stay focused. I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would.
Professor Xu is an interesting professor. I enjoyed his classes. The materials are not too hard and if you make sure you do the homework and read slides you will most likely get it. The midterm is easy. Overall i dont think its the most clarifying class but if you are willing to put in efforts yourself it is a pretty helpful and easy class.
TA is also really nice and helpful.
I think the reviews are a little skewed because there are less stats majors compared to the other professors' classes. The midterm was the easiest upper division stats exam I have ever taken and very straightforward. All the material is on the slides and the professor always stops to answer questions if there are any. The concept can be difficult to wrap your head around at first but that isn't the lecturer's fault, the material itself is just a bit harder, but not super difficult to grasp if people just sat to think about. If you attend lecture and ask questions, you will get a good grade. There are no curveballs in this course.
please please PLEASE do not listen to these other reviewers 😹 “hardest stats prof”…. bro come on. that is for SURE a stretch🙄🙄 prof is very very open to explaining things in lecture if you r confused and asks MULTIPLE times if anyone is confused. so before commenting on his lectures, i would rlly like to see these reviewers up there and asking him the questions they have, cuz ik for sure they are not. he is a very monotone speaker, but honestly if u do the homework and review the lecture slides, you’ll be fine.
the midterm was the easiest exam ive ever had for a stats class, and ive had VERYYYY badly rated prof before🥶🥶. i was genuinely in shock by how direct the exam was, and if u went to class, he would literally tell u what is on it . again, go to class and listen and ask questions! that is literally all you need to do. im a straight B/C student in stats classes and i got a high grade on the midterm (before curving btw) and so it is genuinely so shocking that ppl r saying the exam was unfair. the mean of the midterm scores (BEFORE CURVING) was around 80% btw 🤓🤓!!!!!
+++ loved the TA,, so helpful and willing to answer questions!
again, if you go to each lecture and each discussion, this class will be a breeze. so pls dont listen to these ppl, cause ik for a fact they are complaining just cause they’ve gone into this class thinking it is going to be difficult and so they just don’t try, nor ask questions, nor go to discussion. ppl r so lazy these days my god
Professor Xu is one of the most hardest statistics professor at UCLA. His lectures are unclear and he doesn't go into depth with the coursework. The exams are not open book however he does have a curve depending on how well the class does
